Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly offered his resignation on Tuesday after calling an ousted aircraft carrier captain “stupid” and “naïve.” It was not immediately clear whether Defense Secretary Mark Esper would accept the resignation.

Headline says he resigned, but the text says he offered his resignation. I am going to assume the resignation will be accepted.

This whole thing is outa control, but the acting Secretary calling or suggesting the Captain is stupid is pretty intemperate. I don’t agree with the actions of the Captain, but what the Secretary said cannot be good for morale. It cannot be good to have such dirty laundry aired before our enemies of the world.

The Captain deserved everything he got but the Navy Sec. should have remembered to operate under the “discretion better part of valor” mode on this one.

I wonder if Modly even sees the irony - he busted out Capt. Crozier for going public, outside of the chain of command with his concerns. Fair enough. But his criticisms were every bit as unprofessional for virtually identical reasons. If Modly's position was that the chain of command is sacrosanct, why would he give the speech to all of Crozier's subordinates on ship?

BOTH captain and navy sec are idiots. The captain should not have leaked the letter like a high school girl while the secretary showed little restraint nor professionalism in his letter. I would side more with the navy sec because those were words that Trump would say LOl..

He should have left it with a terse comment along the lines of “loss of confidence in his ability to lead.”

America’s most expensive weapons system was quickly neutralized by a virus (which hardly affects healthy young people like sailors) and deep-state politics.

Crozier had a choice of many control and management options - from testing everyone on board, to using masks, to giving every sailor HCQ and AZT, to having the crew clean the carrier every day (its a common activity in the navy), to flying in extra doctors if even needed.

Instead, Crozier turned this directly into a bureaucratic and political cluster-frack. He’s not a hero. He’s pentagon hack using cheap sentiment as cover for his bureaucratic doosh-bagery.

“He was a Big Stupid Head!”

Definitely. Trump can’t have a Secretary of the Navy that engages in name calling.

I called this on Friday. There was no way Modly was going to be able to survive his stupidity.

No one in the chain of command up to and including the CNO wanted Crozier fired. If they had, they would have done it themselves.

My guess is that the CNO and his staff hate Modly.

Sorry to hear that. A Navy vet who went on to bigger and better things.

Still you don’t give speeches like that in front of the troops, unless you’re talking about the enemy.

It was leaked because they wanted to get rid of Modly.
