You could get 18 months in jail for visiting Colorado county in coronavirus pandemic

Tourists are not welcome in a Colorado county during the coronavirus pandemic, and they could face jail time if they come.

Gunnison County officials initiated a public health order last week that says non-residents and tourists must stay out to help slow the spread of coronavirus, and it comes with hefty consequences if it’s violated, according to county documents.

If someone doesn’t follow the public health order, they could be hit with a fine of up to $5,000 and spend 18 months in county jail, according to the order.

Looks like they’re reviving their famous policy from 100 years ago. As the article says, Gunnison County did something like this - even tougher - during the Spanish Flu and recorded no deaths while neighboring areas had high death rates.

So on one hand they’re freeing prisoners because of the flu thing but jailing others who go outside for fresh air.

But I bet they are letting prisoners, even murderers, out of jail right?

And who in their right mind would want to go to the left-leaning, drug-addled State of Colorado?

“$5,000 and spend 18 months in county jail, according to the order.”

Food and accommodations for about $9/day. I wonder what recreational opportunities that they provide.

So, their message is, “We don’t want any visitors. If you do visit you we will charge you $5K for the privilege and then MAKE YOU STAY anyway for 18 months.”
Talk about your tourists traps.

Sounds like they want to spread as much of this bug in their jails as possible.

Are there no lawyers? No judges? No one with even a modicum of common sense or respect for the Constitution? I know. Its rhetorical.

I suspect Gunnison County is red. It’s rural and I don’t believe it’s been overrun by Californians.

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

Frank Herbert

Frank Herbert had a unhealthy fascination with Bedouin Muslims and Twelver Muslims but I enjoyed his books in my youth.

But I post this to say that the officials of Colorado County should take up Frank Herbert’s Bene-Gesserit litany against fear as their mantra.

If you came for a visit you would find that neither drugs nor liberals are apparent unless you are specifically seeking them out. You might notice dispensaries in places but even those are low key (I think they are required to be).

We are like many US states: the urban area (Denver/ Boulder) are very liberal whereas the rest of the state is more conservative (except for the ski areas: Vail, Aspen, etc). Western State College is in Gunnison so they might have a pocket of libs.

We are losing America to insane fools running many States. And there is no protection for our civil rights from the Federal Government. America will never be hole again and we now are seeing how communism looks like.

Thanks for posting.

I’d wondered if they were going to try to recreate their shutting off of their county, like they did over 100 years ago.

It worked then, but...things are a little different, now ;-)

I wish them luck.

Nothing like this happened during 0bama’s swine flu epidemic where the death toll was much larger at this time.

In time of unemployment, Colorado is offering free lodging and food for eighteen months plus however many days five thousand dollars equates to.

Then all you have is a misdemeanor which drops off of your record.

Nobody thought this through at all.

The Constitution requires no passport requirement to cross state lines.

Counties declaring themselves statelets independent of the nation at large are contravening the Constitution. There is no clause for waiver below the federal level.

It’s the reason that all the state inspection stations that existed up into the ‘60s were declared Unconstitutional. California used to do a full search of your car on demand. Now they can only do a request for ag products.

No one gave the little darlings of Gunnison the right to keep everyone else out while reserving the right for themselves to come and go as they please.

May be OK to provide or screening on entry, but not outright exclusion simply based on driver’s license address.
