Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean and her 8-year-old son drifted into the bay after paddling out in a canoe to retrieve a ball. Her body was recovered on Monday evening.
The body of one of two Kennedy family members who went missing last week when their canoe capsized in the Chesapeake Bay was recovered on Monday, the authorities said.
The Maryland Natural Resources Police said on Monday night that it had found the body of Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, 40, a granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy. It said the search would continue for her son Gideon McKean, 8.
Ms. McKeans body was recovered in 25 feet of water about two and a half miles south of her mothers residence in Shady Side, Md., where the two family members set off in their canoe on Thursday, officials said.

RIP.
Tragic situation.
WILSON!
A tragedy no doubt.
But one must be an idiot to take a child in a canoe into even a “protected” cove in the Chesapeake this time of year. The water is still ice cold and hypothermia will set in quickly if you capsize.
Update...still looking for the boy.
I counted.
Rose & Joe have 73 great-grandchildren.
2 are now deceased.
Don’t worry. They all aren’t running for office
How many millions of dollars have we spent fishing Kennedys and their victims out of bodies of water?
And golf clubs and skiing into trees.
>>Its interesting noting who dies between the Kennedys and Clintons<<
hard to know if it is just “famous name inflation” or if the Kennedeys are indeed star crossed.
The clintons will get their comeuppance beyond this mortal coil. Or will if there is a Just God. But that is for Him to decide, not me.
There once was a time when I would have felt bad for the family.
They are not star crossed. They are simply afflicted with the dangerous combination of low IQ and hubris.
Reminds me of when I was a kid at Yosemite National Park with my family.
My brothers and I wanted to climb Half Dome. My Mom said, “If your hat blows off, you leave it! Don’t leave the trail!”
Sure enough, of course, my hat blows off my head while we’re going up the cables. I think about it, ‘cause it’s just a few feet away. Then the wind really hits, and off it goes, right off the rock.
I thought, “I sure hope Mom and Dad weren’t watching, from down there.”
No PDFs. Cold water. 25 knot winds. 3 foot waves. $10 ball. What could go wrong?
No mention of life jacket that I could see before the paywall kicked in.
I gather the sporting good stores are probably closed and it wouldn’t be a priority delivery for Amazon so procuring another in a timely fashion might have been difficult and look mom it’s right there, we can grab it easy!
What an absurdly random way to die.
The curse of the Kennedy legacy of druggin’, drinkin’ and drownin’
However, Kennedys are notorious for poor, arrogant decisions.
Did they get the ball?
But they know what’s best for us.
A lot of last names for that kid. Sad though...and for a stupid ball. Rest in peace.
It would be instructive to know what the weather conditions were like at the time they got into the canoe. For example what was the wind and wind gusts?
I Googled some pictures of the point where it appears they got in the canoe. It’s a pretty good-sized expanse of water even though it’s not in the bay itself. I would guess, based on the the account, that there was a good bit of wind, certainly nothing you’d get in a canoe for. And obviously not wearing life jackets was very foolish. Although I’m guessing that even with life jackets they were doomed once the canoe had capsized, with the wind, the current and the hypothermia.
