SHOULD WE BE READY FOR THE REEMERGENCE OF SARS? Coronaviruses are well known to undergo genetic recombination (375), which may lead to new genotypes and outbreaks. The presence of a large reservoir of SARS-CoV-like viruses in horseshoe bats, together with the culture of eating exotic mammals in southern China, is a time bomb. The possibility of the reemergence of SARS and other novel viruses from animals or laboratories and therefore the need for preparedness should not be ignored.
SARS-CoV is highly capable of jumping interspecies barriers and is an excellent candidate as an emerging or reemerging pathogen.
We know all this but the Chinese culture ISN’T going to stop eating dogs, bats, whatever else can go in their “chow mein.”

It’s why, while I wouldn’t put engineering something nefarious past the Chinese, the simpler explanation is that it’s just the result of natural origin combined with typical bureaucratic ineptitude, obfuscation, lying and opportunism.
Occam’s razor- the widely predicted emergence of something similar to a previous disease in that area, which is kind of like an earthquake in California, not an ‘if’ but a ‘when - or something engineered in a lab? I don’t consider the second option impossible, merely not necessary.
If I was Xi, I’d be working on a virus that targeted non-Chinese.
Heard the same thing; lab animals are supposed to be properly disposed but instead are sold for food in the wet markets.
