Long Island doctor tries new twist on hydroxychloroquine for elderly COVID-19 patients

A New York doctor hopes to help his elderly COVID-19 patients with a treatment plan inspired by the success tentatively being reported with hydroxychloroquine — and which he says shows promising results.

Dr. Mohammud Alam, an infectious disease specialist affiliated with Plainview Hospital, said 81 percent of infected covid patients he treated at three Long Island nursing homes recovered from the contagion.

i agree and we are using the same combination in hospitalized patients we just don’t call it a study because it is not. Studies get a lot of scorn around here I am glad you see the need. Case in point as i illustrated above look up a drug called xigris

My take on the article is not that it is a “breathless miracle cure”. It is to highlight that a drug that does not cause unwanted heart problems was used and the results were fairly close to what others have been doing. The Dr. does say that this was not a clinical trial. It was more of a alternative attempt to obtain similar results. My take away is that the virus isn’t this big, scary monster that the media is touting it to be. It can be defeated. And is being defeated, by creative measures.

Meanwhile, we have to await the results of “clinical trials”, which may come in several months/years..

No, you don't. These drugs have been approved in the US for many years. Any doctor can prescribe them. Ivwrmectin is also approved and can be prescribed off-label for Cv19.

Azithromycin has been off patent and cheaply available for more than a decade. What’s your point?

Someone should point this out to Fauci. He may carry MD somewhere after his name but he is far more a eesearcher than a doctor. That’s true if most of the CDC FDA people. I know some have reservations about them but the USPHS is made up of doctors and nurses who do practice. Maybe they should be making these decisions about treatment.

Freegards mjp!

There is an anti viral effect in the dish. It is true of all the macrolides. That is why this one was used as opposed to many other better options to control secondary infections. This came out of AIDS research IIRC. These compounds have multiple effects.

The antibiotic zithromycin is for treating secondary bacterial infections that might occur, not the virus itself. Any broad spectrum antibiotic should be able to work as well as zithromycin.

Azithromycin also helps the body's cells absorb zinc, and zinc interferes with viral replication.

I don't know if doxycyclin does this as well, but the proof that it works, regardless of mechanism, is the survivors. One could argue that the "control group" is the other area nursing homes that didn't have the same high survival rates.

Not all Mohammads are bad.

My GP's first name is Mohammad. He's from Syria and that man saved my life. I am *not* kidding that he saved my life.

I was in his office for a routine visit when my heart went into afib. He caught it, kept my heart going and got me to the hospital.

If I hadn't have been in is office the moment it happened, I'd be dead.

He is without a doubt the kindest, most compassionate and gentle doctor I've ever had. Damn' smart too.

"the control group does not have to be non treated patients although there are some that..."

Freegards Mom MD!

My best friend's uncle is probably going to die with COVID-19 today. The one I told you about that would not keep his cpap clean. His wife has it too but not as bad yet. She will survive prolly but Chris was the only one able to care for her (dementia).

As to HCQ/Zpac/Zn, we are going to get the studies. It just takes time. Sad that people have to die but it was always this way. "We are in God's hands!"

__________

Right. Where’s the zinc that stops the virus from replicating? That’s why he probably lost patients to cytokine storm.

I’d think, in regards to this virus, secondary bacterial pneumonia is highest concern and use for antibiotic. I wonder if it’s even necessary in people who current on pneumonia vax.

Isn’t every hospital not using those drugs a control group not using those drugs?

I am sure we have plenty of hospitals that can be called control groups. Especially in those states where such drugs were initially banned from use.
