The US Navy fired the commanding officer of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, an aircraft carrier stuck in port and dealing with a severe coronavirus outbreak, Navy leaders said Thursday afternoon.
"Today, at my direction, the commanding officer of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, Capt. Brett Crozier, was relieved of command," Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly told reporters at the Pentagon Thursday. "I did not come to this decision lightly."
Modly said he lost confidence in the commanding officer.
The Navy's decision to relieve Crozier came after he wrote a letter to Navy leadership begging the military branch to take decisive action to counter the spread of the virus on the carrier by getting sailors off the ship as soon as possible.
The letter was leaked to the San Francisco Chronicle, the captain's hometown newspaper, which published it on Tuesday.

Any information he made available publicly about the health of any sailor on that ship should land that guy in the brig for 20+. Peeling potatos, or onions, or whatever sailors eat.

Considering that it appears that he leaked his “memo” to the press, and the Navy was already weighing his suggestions, it seems he was engaging in politics in uniform...a no no last I heard.
Wonder if he was one of the “proud Hillary voters” in the military?
Its amazing how easy it is to neutralize America’s most expensive single weapon system.
It seems simple virus (which has limited impact on young, healthy people, like sailors) and a pussy captain are all it takes.
The Captain was an idiot, and probably a "Never Trumper".
It was the leak of the memo, not the memo itself, that got Crozier fired. I’ve seen no evidence Crozier actually leaked it himself, although he may have used an insecure email to send it.
Also - he had probably at least a Lt. Commander as his intel officer. Between the two of them some personal contacts at the Pentagon, his Academy Class buddies and knowledge of the best appropriate protocols and probabilities. No begging necessary.
Sorry I just don’t get it. Now I was USN back in 1960 - and enlisted. But anyone with functional neurons and the ability to read had to have figured out the necessary and most appropriate protocols weeks ago. His Intel guy and staff had to know.

The Navy is already implementing his recommendations from the memo. I’ve seen no evidence it was he who leaked the memo. There may be some other shenanigans going on.
I have a close relative on the Roosevelt. (We exchange e-mails more than once per day...maybe because I’m ex-Navy (Carriers myself)
The crew’s opinion seems to be that he got shafted. The CO was a highly regarded commander
I have yet to see evidence that CPT Crozier is the ‘leaker’.
