I wonder too if these checks are subject to garnishment orders.

No.

LOL!! I’m diabetic, so booze is out of the question. Maybe I should start doing drugs. Nah!! That would take away from my book money, and helping my kids from time to time.

Everybody needs to file a tax return. It’s the American Way.

What if they have tax withheld from their payments?

They didn’t earn their SS?

What if they have passive earnings?

“We’re in one of the richest countries in the world,
But the minimum wage is lower than it was thirty five years ago.
There are homeless people everywhere.
This homeless guy asked me for money the other day.
I was about to give it to him and then I thought he was going to use it on drugs or alcohol.
And then I thought, that’s what I’m going to use it on.
Why am I judging this poor bastard.”

“Social Security recipients who typically don’t file tax returns”

How does the IRS let them off the hook?”

When I ever get enough money to give to anybody I will be happy to pay taxes. My social security is so low that it is amazing anyone can actually live on it. I can’t so I am constantly on the line with my debtors who keep increasing their monthly amounts of what I owe. I still do not understand how my utilities could go up +30% in a very short time. Besides I am so ill now I don’t have the energy to fight any battles on my behalf. Sigh.

"So no earned income tax credit for them?"

Don't you have to have children/dependents to qualify for earned income? Last time I was eligible for that was back in 1979 when I was a divorced mother of two, working for Monroe County in Rochester, NY, and making $5579 a year. Then I got a real job as a Correctional Officer in 1980, working for NY State's prison system. The job started out at about $12,500, then went up to $14,500 after you finished your initial training period. I thought I was in heaven. Most money I'd ever made up to then.

An earlier freeper mentioned that they did not need the money since they got ss. I agreed with him/her but said that I would use the extra to help younger still working members of my family out.

bs...the young families need it more than grandma or grandpa sitting home doing nothing....

FTR, I work part time AND receive SS so does my adult dtr who lives with us and so does my retired husband....I just think the people who got screwed by this pandemic hysteria should get the bulk of the money and all the fearpers who have pushed that agenda should understand that and I'm sure, agree with it......

"...so don’t get me wrong but....."

Yep! You are wrong... No person receives a SS check that they can live on... It comes to a fraction of what either unemployment or welfare & food stamp recipients receive, and, thanks to negative tax filing, they will all get chicom virus checks just like the tax refund checks they get just for being poor or lazy...

"some states tax SS and retirement $$"

I live in NY State, and wanted to move to South Carolina after I retired until I found out they'd tax my pension. I already paid taxes on my contribution when I earned it, and it's the reason I don't have to pay taxes on it to the NY State now.

Most people who file tax returns get a refund of some type.

Making everybody file a return whether they have to pay taxes or not should be mandatory so as to decrease the support of the IRS and the overbearing gov’t in general.

My sex life is like social security; I get a little every month just not enough to live on. I might have to ask for a supplement...
