President Trump on Tuesday said Americans could use scarves as makeshift protective masks as the nation grapples with a shortage of protective gear amid the coronavirus outbreak.
"You know, you can use a scarf, a lot of people have scarves," Trump told reporters during a news conference at the White House. "My feeling is if people want to do it there is certainly no harm to it. I would say do it rather than going out to get a mask."

I’d hate to use my Burberry scarf; I have plenty of N95 Masks.
I’ve been going “bandit” style since this whole thing started.
Scarfs, neckerchiefs or any cloth will do. Wash your hands and mask when you get home. There’s a reason why a country like Japan, where population density is extremely high, has so few virus deaths. It’s called ‘wearing a mask’.

He’s right. Most masks, unless they’re serious medical-level masks, are essentially just a mild filter to keep you getting infected through somebody’s sneeze (the mask blocks droplets) or to keep you from infecting somebody else through your own sneeze or cough.
A scarf works just fine - remove it carefully, drop it in the washer, then wash your hands and you’ll be good to go.
Love that “ mask” - and the expression on the face of the wearer!
