Note: This story has been updated with comments from the U.S. Navy.
The captain of a nuclear aircraft carrier with more than 100 sailors infected with the coronavirus pleaded Monday with U.S. Navy officials for resources to allow isolation of his entire crew and avoid possible deaths in a situation he described as quickly deteriorating.
The unusual plea from Capt. Brett Crozier, a Santa Rosa native, came in a letter obtained exclusively by The Chronicle and confirmed by a senior officer on board the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, which has been docked in Guam following a COVID-19 outbreak among the crew of more than 4,000 less than a week ago.
This will require a political solution but it is the right thing to do, Crozier wrote. We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die. If we do not act now, we are failing to properly take care of our most trusted asset our Sailors.

“crozier is taking an opportunity to slam the commander in chief.”
Where?
Yes-— which noticed right away. How about deep state Pelosibot queers from SF putting this in letter form/PDF.
And the bit about “confirmed by a senior officer” who is AT sea under sea orders. Just how the hell did they exclusively obtain that “confirmation” from dockside in Guam? Just how? Both these dudes are in some serious crap— all concern for the sailors not to be ignored.
You do not air the information outside Navy channels. The NavSec’s comments indicate they have been handling this.
Time for Naval Investigative Service to get the details. This is appalling lack of OpSec-— even in socalled “peacetime”.
None hospitalized and none show serious symptoms. Was just in Guam.
When i was active in the 1970’s, this could get you kicked out with a BCD or Dishonorable discharge.
Very good point, not sure what is being asked for.
I have no idea why this story is out there, but, man, what a nightmare.
I’m praying for them.
"Where?"
If it's not obvious to you, pay no attention.
Clean out the Pentagon. Clean it out. We saw over the tenure of the previous administration blatant rigging of the chain of command with leftist’s at every level. PDJT dismissed/fired only the top brass himself, but all the rest are still Obama yessirree people of leftist bent operating in opposition/resistance to our new administration.
Clean out the whole damned mess. Fire every one of them, and put in only American loyalists. People that care about this country.
There are some idiots on this site who will no doubt be asking “do these officers smoke pot, do they vape?”
“If it’s not obvious to you, pay no attention. “
Translated: chief Lee runamok has. no answer to my question!
I think Captain meant isolating the crew from each other, you know social distancing. This would be hard to accomplish while under way.
This is complete and utter BS - every letter sent from a US Navy Ship is serialized - this one isn’t.
Strange there’s no endorsement from the Battle Group Commander, which would be standard procedure. No CVN CO is this stupid.
Nothing about this ‘letter’ passes the smell test. It’s not that hard to get letterhead from a ship and have a few disgruntled, soon-to-be court-martialed, sailors pen an embarrassing note.
“Very good point, not sure what is being asked for.”
Read the letter. The request is very specific.
Except the ‘request’ isn’t from the Commanding Officer. Other than that small point, you’re correct.
Seems suspect — why not just disembark the sick? Guam is one of our territories, after all. Set up a field hospital, treat them. They shouldn’t be bad cases, they are all young, in good shape, and probably don’t have life-threatening underlying conditions (we don’t let active sailors operate with those, do we?)
I think he was trying to equate that ANY problem with the military is seen as a strike against the President. To admit that anything is wrong means it’s his fault and is a ‘bad’ CINC.
That’s why the story NEVER should have gotten out. The public does NOT need to know this...because our enemies will too.
Calling BS.
This sort of thing would be sent encrypted as an Op Immediate radio message.
“Except the request isnt from the Commanding Officer. “
Please explain.
More on USS Theodore Roosevelt and here (updated)
Every HR dept. would have records.
