MEXICO CITY - Twenty-eight U.S. spring break tourists who returned to Texas after vacationing with a large group in the Mexican beach resort of Cabo San Lucas have tested positive for coronavirus, drawing attention to possibly low detection of cases in Mexico.
The 28 confirmed cases are self-isolating and dozens more are under quarantine while being monitored and tested, the city of Austin said in a statement on Tuesday.
About a week and a half ago, approximately 70 people in their 20s departed in a chartered plane for a spring break trip, the city said, adding that some of the group returned on separate commercial flights.
Currently, 28 young adults on this trip have tested positive for COVID-19 and dozens more are under public health investigation, the statement said.
Austin public health authorities and the University of Texas at Austin have contacted every spring breaker onboard the plane using flight manifests from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the citys statement said.
Mexicos usually packed beaches, bars and clubs have largely emptied after U.S. authorities issued a ban on non-essential travel to Mexico, including for tourist trips across the U.S.-Mexico land border.
Mexico declared a health emergency on Monday and issued stricter rules aimed at containing the fast-spreading coronavirus.

Meanwhile many of the people heaping scorn on them are also screaming about not being able to attend church in-person?
Agreed. Meh.
“Only old people get it, it’s just the flu, bro. Party on!!”
They had the money to go t mexico? To the beach? Get a clue
Their parents sent them. Why. I do not know
My kids school sent a notice the Thursday before spring break ended. My kid was at school. Studying. Finishing thesis
I dreaded what was going to happen when the idiotic spring breakers came back Sunday Monday
As soon as I got word I had a plane ticket in one hour, scheduled our (cab) driver (no not Uber) and had the kid home in 24 hours. On the plane before the spring breakers contaminated the fleet
Just duh.
Dumba$$ery is not wasted on the young!
Hopefully they won’t come down with bad cases.
Not smart.
Worth risking your life for?
Depends on how much value you put on our life I guess.
“28 Texas spring-breakers test positive for coronavirus”
Probably dwarfed by the number of STDs...
Spring has sprung.
Small wonder the Mexican people view Americans with disdain. We arent sending our best folks — to vacation in their country
Planting the seeds of Idiocracy.
Well,it's kinda like a cold except it's not your nose that runs. LMAO
Oh to be young and indestructible again!
Last Saturday I was given a rather painful but quick nose swab and the results were told to me today. I tested positive for Covid-19 but I'm ‘’asymptomatic’’ which means I haven't ‘’presented’’(some doctor lingo for you) any systems because so far I haven't any. But as a precaution I have had to have my temperature taken twice a day. So far it's been normal. My doctor told me apparently I have ‘’strong antibodies’’. He also told me there could be a very distinct possibility because of my apparent strong immune system I may be able, though a blood donation, be helpful in providing a vaccine or cure.
“And not one will die from it. They have a cold that gives them permission to watch television.”
That’s fine, as long as they didn’t infect any of us older people.
Did they at least take that step - to stay clear of people who have to deal with more than the sniffles if they get the virus?
OK.
Ban them from going to the hospital/
Deal with it on your own.
there is nothing, NOTHING in mexco worth yer life...
wow I’m sorry to hear this but happy you aren’t experiencing symptoms! You are one of the few here that I have heard actually has it...
Sorry, dude.
"Go away...'Baitin'!"
Words from a missionary friend in Mazatlan, Mexico sent today:
Mexico COVID-19 update:
We want to update all of you who are friends and family about what is happening where we are living and we want to bring hope and encouragement to all of you we love.
Here’s what’s going on in Mexico from the perspective of a missionary who lives in Mexico. All local ministries have virtually stopped all outreach for the next month and they have allowed their missionaries to go back to their home countries with family as we wait to see what takes place in the future with the virus.
Just this past weekend we entered Phase 3 of the quarantine and we see most obeying and are hopeful that the community is doing the best they can. The President is not responding well, but the Governor of Sinaloa is doing better. There is great potential for it to get much worse in Mexico with the lack of testing and reporting as well as community activity, but only time will tell. All this being said we will be ready to respond and serve the community or do what is directed by government officials.
I know people here can’t stock up on food and supplies and the local ministries are able to meet some of these needs by providing groceries and basic necessities which is great, but there will be many more needs to come. Please pray for the people and the leaders of Mexico.
