WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump is expected to relax ambitious Obama-era vehicle mileage standards and raise the ceiling on damaging fossil fuel emissions for years to come, gutting one of the United States single-biggest efforts against climate change.
The Trump administration is expected to release a final rule Tuesday on mileage standards through 2026, watering down a tough Obama mileage standard that would have encouraged automakers globally to ramp up production of electric vehicles and more fuel-efficient gasoline vehicles.
Trumps Cabinet heads have continued a push to rollback public health and environment regulations despite the coronavirus outbreak riveting the worlds attention. The administration - like others before it - is facing procedural rules that will make changes adopted before the last six months of Trumps current term tougher to throw out, even if the White House changes occupants.
The Trump administration says the looser mileage standards will allow consumers to keep buying the less fuel-efficient SUVs that U.S. drivers have favored for years. Opponents say it will undercut the Obama administrations legacy effort to cut climate-damaging fossil fuel emissions, and will kill hundreds more Americans a year through dirtier air, compared to the Obama standards.
The Obama administration mandated 5% annual increases in fuel economy. Leaked versions of the Trump administrations latest proposal show a 1.5% annual increase, backing off from its initial proposal simply to stop mandating increases in fuel efficiency after 2020.
The transportation sector is the nations largest source of climate-changing emissions.

CAFE is genetic
It makes all auto genera look alike.
will kill hundreds more Americans a year through dirtier air, compared to the Obama Standards
Now that sets a new standard for MSM BS. AP has really upped their game.
Cluck the fimate.
As he should be doing.
The market is going to take care of this shortly. John Goodenough just invented a superior solid-state glass battery that blows away anything on the market.
This innovation will likely be the end of the internal combustion engine for passenger automobiles.
John Goodenough isn’t just some nobody - he’s the 97 year old nobel prize winner who already gave us Lithium Ion battery technology as well as RAM (Random Access Memory).
This innovation should make electric vehicles so much more cost effective, efficient and reliable than ICE cars that nobody will want a gasoline/diesel/LPG powered car again.
glass? buy sand futures!
Get rid of CAFE standards, national standardized concealed carry laws, along with mandatory seat belt laws, and helmet laws for adults.
OHHHH...I am chewing my knuckles!
So supposing the new cleaner standard will save 1000s of lives the spending trillions will be worth it, right?
A fathers day dream for me...
So Trump is fiddling and burning down Obamaland while people are dying.
Too big to fit in my driveway ...
just needs 10 wheel drive, a crawl gear, and a 20” lift with tractor tires... and then it would be perfection...
NO Kali or Nu Yawk.
Somehow, I think we could do well without them. Kali's tree hugger laws killed American industry. They demonstrated that thieves could get rich in government, if they could pass onerous, illegal regulations, that sounded good on paper, and then charge customers to ignore or enforce them, depending on what was more profitable.

Oh, that mean old Trump! He’s just trying to kill us and hurt the planet.
Gutting Obama policies? Great. Only one thing better than that. Ah, you figure it out.
I’m going to go out and burn a few old tractor tires in celebration!
Once again, Trump has blood on his hands. /Cuck Todd sarcasm
DAMN IT! Stop the annual increases. We caved to the rabid enviro-kooks yet again. So now it takes 3 years to get the increase they wanted in 1 year. That is not a win.
