Coronavirus Update: Cuomo Says ‘I’m Seeing People Die All Around Me’ As He Appeals For More Federal Government Help

Gov. Andrew Cuomo continued to push for additional help from the federal government as the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread.

There are now 66,497 confirmed coronavirus cases in New York, Cuomo said Monday, including 9,517 hospitalized, 2,352 ICU patients and 4,204 patients who have been hospitalized and discharged.

The death toll climbed to 1,218.

“Big picture is the situation is painfully clear now. There’s no question as to what we’re dealing with. There’s no question as to the consequences. There’s no question as to the grief and loss of life. And there’s no question about what we must do. There are only two missions. There are only two operations that we need to perform. First, the public has to be responsible. Stay at home,” Cuomo said. “It is a mandate. Stay at home. If you’re a non-essential worker, stay at home. If you leave the house you’re exposing yourself to danger. If you leave the house, you’re exposing others to danger.”

Cuomo said the isolation can be oppressive but “it is better than the alternative.”

Cuomo said people must stay six feet apart whenever they go out.

Cuomo again threatened to close down playgrounds if people don’t get the message and stay apart.

So NY, how about your break open the warehouse full of supplies you have stock piled for “disaster preparedness” instead of whining at the Fed to pick up the tab for you?

What you mean you don’t have it? What happened to the $10s of billions in “disaster preparedness” money NY was given since 09-11?

I’m charting deaths per day, and New York now has 2 consecutive days where there has been a reduction.

He is on TV every day to try and save his own ass. He should have taken this more serious, and he did not.
When the National Guard was put out I saw them standing there in groups on their phones, hands in pockets , or talking to each other with no protection.

Now many of those from NY are moving about the country spreading it.
Instead Cuomo has threatened to sue states who check New yorkers instead of stopping all travel
Like our Gov stated. If you cannot get into FL from China, Italy etc then why can New Yorkers come in.

This is right out of Carville's playbook during Katrina. Remember his “Man, you got to get down here!" tantrum?

Gov. Coumo is doing the best he can with what he has. Manhattan is probably the highest population density in the US. Sadly, there are fools who ignore social distancing. Coumo has needed to close some parks to stop the idiocy. This morning a bunch of fools ignored social distancing to watch the ship Comfort dock. You can see the image at The Daily Mail. I caption it "Fools R Us".

Things are better upstate, but our curve (I plotted it from the Johns Hopkins data) is a "Mini-Me" version of the NY State curve. It shows no flattening yet. Frown.

Yep my wife and I said the same.

He and others from NY are high tailing it out with no regard for others, or the country

I think better than 80% would survive- we’;ve seen a couple of studies done now where over 90% survived- one larger 700 study was nearly 100% succesful

Neither the federal government nor the State of NY was prepared for this. His request for federal aid is very much a request that the blind lead the blind.

Given those numbers, the death rate is 1.83%.

It is also safe to assume the cases of infection are under reported as the denominator is only verified cases.

It is possible also that chinaflu deaths may be over reported but not as likely. That would depend on the ethics of the medical personnel..If the numbers are supplied by politicians well that is a whole 'nuther story.

Cuomo is Aesop's Grasshopper, complaining now because he wasted the "good times" when he should have been saving for the "bad times."

Now that the bad times are here, what does Cuomo have to show for how he managed the state in the prior years?

“Big picture is the situation is painfully clear now. There’s no question as to what we’re dealing with. There’s no question as to the consequences. There’s no question as to the grief and loss of life. And there’s no question about what we must do. There are only two missions. There are only two operations that we need to perform. First, the public has to be responsible. Stay at home,”

ANd yet there does appear to be SO MANY QUESTIONS. And he is not saying anything.

Every day, if you leave your house, you are at risk of dying. You get into your car, you might die. YOu cross the street, you might die. And every day, your driving threatens others. YOu might crash and kill someone else. You might have the flu, or some other transmittable illness, and give it to an immunocompromised person.

The risk is not new, it is not unique. It is just more severe. This isn’t an “on-off” thing, where there was no risk, and now there is infinite risk.

So, how do we decide how much risk we can take. And who gets to decide how much risk society must bear?

Note that in the abstract, a person who goes out can get infected, and if they are infected, they can infect other people WHO GO OUT. So if you have a 100% voluntary lockdown, the only people who would be at risk would be people who decided for themselves to take that risk.

But we want to protect essential people — the question is how much are we allowed to do to protect them? Is this so terrible a disease that any exposure to our essential people is unthinkable? Clearly not. Even if you accept the death rate at the high end of what people are saying, it isn’t.

I think it is rational to do social distancing to prevent overwhelming the hospitals, and then holding to account the politicians who force the hospitals to run so close to their limits, and to not prepare for a pandemic. But this excuse of “people are dying so we must act” works for EVERYTHING.

We saw this in January, where VIrginia’s governor, with no evidence, declared an emergency because of a peaceful protest that was planned, and took away the rights of the people to assemble and carry their weapons. He put up barricades, ignored emergency law, and got the courts to back him up. ANd NOTHING happened at the rally, his entire thing was false, but he got away with it.

ANd now we have mayors threatening to permanently close synagogues if the people who belong to them decide they need to worship their god together.

.......”The smell of corruption is in the air in New York”...

How did all those incubators end up in Cuomo’s neighbor states warehouse? He could make a pretty dime on those at 25-25 thousand a pop. Probably why he said this last week they’d help other states and nations who need incubators later on. He’s such a crook!

He spent the money he should have spent on hospitals and ventilators on the big ever expanding welfare state.

If it is so terrible, then why are the NYC subways still open? I have been asking this question on blogs for 2 weeks.

Keep the hysteria going, Cuomo. You’re benefiting from it, even if it means you have to use fake footage from Italy.
