FDA issues emergency authorization of 2 anti-malaria drugs for coronavirus treatment

(CNN) — The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an emergency use authorization for chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to treat patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

The drugs — which are used to treat malaria and other conditions — have been called game changers by President Donald Trump.

But thus far, there is little scientific evidence that chloroquine, or its closely-related analogue hydroxychloroquine, are effective in treating Covid-19.

What happened? The authorization came in a letter dated Saturday, but the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) acknowledged the FDA’s action in a Sunday news release. The FDA limited the scope of its authorization to drugs supplied from the Strategic National Stockpile. The HHS announced that two pharmaceutical companies — Bayer and a division of Novartis — had donated the drugs to the stockpile.

Do the drugs work? In its statement, HHS said:

“Anecdotal reports suggest that these drugs may offer some benefit in the treatment of hospitalized COVID-19 patients. “The safety profile of these drugs has only been studied for FDA approved indications, not COVID-19.”

While there’s limited evidence on the efficacy of chloroquine, or hydroxychloroquine, the FDA said the drugs’ benefits outweighed their risk. In its letter, the FDA encouraged randomized clinical trials that could assess the effectiveness of the drugs. It also noted that the known and potential benefits outweigh the risks.

Who can the drugs be used to treat? The authorization is limited to patients who are currently hospitalized and weigh at least 50kg, or about 110 pounds. Under the emergency use authorization, health care providers must contact their local or state health department to access the drugs.

These idiots are exhausting in their snark...

“Thus far, there is little scientific evidence that CNN is a news organization.”

I see how this works...

It is an effective deterrent as well.

But clearly at this stage infected people are the priority.

Hi RummyChick!
I’m interested in your alternate ideas; if you’ve shared then elsewhere I’ve missed them. I’m upping the vitamin C and zinc, but if you have other strategies I’d so appreciate hearing them. Blessings and be well!

You have to get the zinc into the cell. One dr on texags suggested quercetin phytosome taken with zinc piconilate

I ordered some lauricidan to perhaps help with cytokine storm..cheaper versions available. Figured what the heck..it might help with psoriasis patch. Saw it on texags site too

Perhaps too much zinc entering regular cells can also cause issues..?

Oh no doubt that too much zinc is bad for you in general

Dont know about this wacky virus. Dr on texags warned about Vitamin D perhaps causing an cytokine storm issue if you take too much. He is thinking stop high dosing if the virus hits. I have seen studies about this

The whole QT prolongation fad is a thing with these newer Doctors coming on line in the last 15 years or so. Especially when psycho active drugs are needed for quieting of patients going thru transient psychosis and anxiety who may be a danger to themselves. If there is an off chance that someone might have a marginal enlarged QT....nope can’t the antipsychotic, tie them up and let them scream it out...even though in 34 years of nursing practice I’ve never seen r on t induced Vtach triggered by these drugs(which is what an over enlarged QT can trigger)...but in the last 10 years ago this QT business has become quite the rage amongst doctors of a certain age range. Sure it could happen...but so can meteor thru your roof. You give the drug as needed and monitor the patients and if over time they tolerate the drug...all to the good!

I think just taking normal rda amounts to cover gaps in diet or when disease may be stressing the body is probably the best. The body will take in what it can process and it will excrete the rest. High dosing of certain amounts or of certain types of vitamins may stress the liver and kidneys as they try to excrete what the body actually doesn’t need and may lead to issues that the Dr. you mention is speaking of.

So just take a gel type vitamin pill with minerals since they are shown to be amongst the most absorbable vitamins next to the “fizzy” kind(which are said to be the best). Even the pill types absorb better when crushed and mixed in juice....may taste awful so hold your nose and drink water after.

I dont take much of anything for liver toxicity reasons. However if i have to go out and could end up with the virus i am ready. I am going to take the lauricidan daily to see if it might help with psoriasis which is already a cytokine issue.

There’s more evidence to support the use of these drugs than there is for global warming.

“They are not without their issues - heart arrhythmias, for one.”
——————
My 82 y.o. mother has arrhythmia and RA. She has been taking hydroxychloroquine for the RA for 5 years with no ill effects (including no retinal issues, another side effect of LONG TERM us). This is 5 days of treatment, and unlikely to do anything more serious than cause nausea or diarrhea in 99.99% if patients in that time frame. There are other drugs to fix arrhythmia, not so much for CV, which can be life-threatening and also have possible permanent and serious health issues.

This. Bureaucracy doesn’t move this fast on it’s own, ever.

************************************************************

Just wondering...need help in translating English.

Does “have been called game changers” mean the same thing as Trump saying “could possibly be a game changer, maybe we ought to look at it”?

For some reason...I don’t know what it could possibly be, but, I just seem to have a little problem putting trust in “reporters”.

“Hydroxychloroquine isn’t totally effective by itself - it has to be combined with azithromycin or another antiviral to reduce the viral load to undetectable levels.”
—————
Azithromycin is an antibiotic, and thus utterly useless against a virus. It is used in this treatment because the China virus leads to pneumonia and the azithromycin helps to control that infection while the hydroxychloroquine dies it’s work. Hydroxychloroquine works because it allows zinc to pass into the cells in your body, and the zinc severely interferes with reproduction of the virus. This is why the doctor in NY State (Zelinsky?) has used all three with his patients.

That is a good anecdote. I have so many weird things wrong with me that GPs dont even fully understand.. that i wont take it as a preventative.

I just had a GP tell me i need to take iron after my blood test results even though that GP clearly knows i have thalassemia.

When i reminded the GP that I cant take iron..the response was..well eat some foods high in iron.

Uh...still no. Lolol

6 million doses will treat either 500,000 or 600,000 people, depending on which course of treatment is followed. With that many doses available, there is no shortage.

”...we will need at *least* 3,840,000,000 pills.“
———————
With respect, that is nonsense.

We have about 125,000 diagnosed as infected, and probably 5x that many actually infected, 80% of whom need no help. By the time 500,000 courses of treatment are used, we will know if it works and, if so, production in the meantime will have provided more. This is an easy drug to make in mass quantities, and many companies will do so.
