At a coronavirus task force briefing on Sunday, President Trump announced the social distancing guidelines aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus will be extended to April 30th.
"We will be extending our guidelines to April 30th to slow the spread," Trump said Sunday in the Rose Garden.
The extension was announced after the president said the peak death rate in the United States for the coronavirus is expected to hit in two weeks, according to models of the virus.
"Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before the victory is won," Trump said. "That would be the greatest loss of all. Therefore, the next two weeks and during this period, it's very important that everyone strongly follow the guidelines."
President Trump encouraged Americans to "strongly follow the guidelines" on social distancing, adding, "The better you do, the faster this whole nightmare will end."
Trump had previously stated a goal of opening the country up by Easter, April 12th. When asked about the Easter timeline by a reporter on Sunday, Trump said the goal was "just an aspiration," but one that had to be extended based on the incoming data.
The president said the administration's latest plans a summary of the taskforce's findings will be announced on Tuesday.
We will be extending our guidelines to April 30 to slow the spread. On Tuesday, we will be finalizing these plans and providing a summary of our findings."

Suck it up and keep doing what you need to do to hang in there....study and find out how youre going to be a part of the recovery when this beast is beaten.

In pretty much every type of crisis things look dire and even hopeless in the beginning. Under the fears and uncertainty of the moment its often hard to foresee future solutions and brighter days. It takes awhile to get past the shit storm, but we always somehow do.
Not being pollyannish. Just reflect5ing on the lessons of history.
We fought other wars a whole lot longer than a few months....as well as destruction....and we recovered. We’ll do it with this as well.
I like your optimism.

So what?....It’s still better than people dying. I think we’ll be in this until people who need to understand ‘LIFE’ trumps everything else...
Amen, my FRiend.
We will beat this, and we will re-elect PDJT.
The people of America need to go about business as usual, keep the economy going and let what happens happen.
Their is no future if we hide in our houses and let our nation crash down around us while the birds sing and the sun shines, both oblivious to it all.
What happened to not letting the cure be worse than the disease?
Overkill
I don't believe that the CDC know what they are projecting.
Perhaps they can share the test data they are using and tell how it is representative of the population in various areas.
Their model my be good, but without good estimates of the input parameters they get garbage out.
I suspect one of the problems is that people arent really social distancing yet...or it isnt being done consistently and effectively. I see a lot of anecdotal information about that...dont know if thats so on a wide scale, but it wouldnt surprise me.
On the other hand, this particular virus may be so contagious that the level of social distancing needed may be much greater than we are engaging in.
Fresh meat will be gone soon.
Also, grocery stores will be bare.
Planting new crops? Harvesting?
This is the beginning of the end.
Wow! Guess youve never heard of the cure being worse than the disease.
I don’t know . There seems to be an excess of scared, panicked and weak - willed people in our society. It is the snow flaking of our society . Life is risky. Live your life. Take reasonable precautions . Wash your hands and face several times a day. Rely on your immune system . You are more likely to die in a car accident than this commie death virus. Remember
: we are all going to die sometime .
If the bill is $10 trillion we are looking at roughly $100 million spent per death.

Well said, my FRiend.
That's exactly what my Dads generation did in the 40's.
I'm not singling you out--there are many posts below you that agree.
But way-way-way-wait. The difference between April 12 (Easter) and less than 3 weeks later has everyone reaching for the cyanide?
I don't know about others, but I'm near NYC, and I see more traffic and more shopping every day. Just not restaurants--which are all take-out--or bars.
In supermarkets, hardware suppliers, drug stores, inventories are re-stocked, with plenty of customers. People doing lots of home projects, getting on with life, eager to get back to work. That's a good thing.
Nope. Already given our freedom away and set socialism in motion. Sorry, I dont vote for Socialists. 2020 election doesnt matter now. Our freedoms are already gone.
Those exponential functions can get stuff blowed up rel gud real fast.
We are going to see when the peak hits just how high it will be in [hopefully] the next two weeks. NYC is the pace setter and thus the place to watch. My County is just getting started so I'd guess that we are a month away from seeing the curve-bent-over-peak much less the climb down timing on the far side.
