WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. - More than a fifth of Detroits police force is quarantined; two officers have died from coronavirus and at least 39 have tested positive, including the chief of police.
For the 2,200-person department, that has meant officers working doubles and swapping between units to fill patrols. And everyone has their temperature checked before they start work.
An increasing number of police departments around the country are watching their ranks get sick as the number of coronavirus cases explodes across the U.S. The growing tally raises questions about how laws can and should be enforced during the pandemic, and about how departments will hold up as the virus spreads among those whose work puts them at increased risk of infection.
I dont think its too far to say that officers are scared out there, said Sgt. Manny Ramirez, president of Fort Worth Police Officers Association.
Nearly 690 officers and civilian employees at police departments and sheriffs offices around the country have tested positive for COVID-19, according to an Associated Press survey this week of over 40 law enforcement agencies, mostly in major cities. The number of those in isolation as they await test results is far higher in many places.
Anticipating shortages, police academies are accelerating coursework to provide reinforcements. Masks, gloves and huge volumes of hand sanitizer have been distributed. Roll call and staff meetings are happening outside, over the phone or online. Precinct offices, squad cars and equipment get deep cleaned in keeping with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance.
Yet, many are worried its not enough. This week, groups representing American police and fire chiefs, sheriffs, mayors and county leaders asked President Donald Trump in a letter to use the Korean War-era Defense Production Act to ensure they have enough protective gear.

In this March 26, 2020, file photo, a Chicago police officer notifies a cyclist that the trails in Promontory Park, along Lake Michigan, are closed in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19 infections, in Chicago.
Appears the police in Michigan are a bunch of over-weight, out of shape and lazy pussies with under-lying health issues.
There is something about a cop wearing a mask that bothers me.

If it is Just the Flu, how many flu seasons has the Detroit Police Department had two officers die of the flu?
How about a national holiday just for cops?
Partisan Media Shills update.
God bless and protect them!
Here in SoCal the freeways have been moving at 85 plus for 2 weeks, I keep telling myself that if I should get pulled over for speeding, I will immediately start Coughing, Gagging, Hacking,... And tell the Officer that I don’t feel good and am going home.
When he sees and hears me I think I have a 100% chance of being told to GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE and Go Home!!!
The AP article serves no constructive public purpose.
NONE.
Well, they could shoot a dog, and they’d feel better.
Anyway, crime has to be way down. There is no one on the streets, people are staying home, which prevents burglaries, and many stores are stripped bare, so there’s not a lot to steal.
Just Manny being Manny.
So .1% have died and less than 2% have tested positive (generally 80% of those cases are mild) and they’re scared, so says the author.
Why? The Line Ranger did.
About a dozen of the county Sheriff staff are on 14-day quarantine. None have tested positive so far. They are systematically releasing "non-violent" prisoners from the jails.
However, gun stores have been designated "essential business activities" and are still open. There is a six-day backlog to clear the NCIS checks and pickup a firearm. Ammunition in the common calibers is still available. More so than toilette paper!
There are a lot more visible police patrols - even if they are not getting out of their cars. Maybe being in a vehicle is safer than hanging around the police station.
USPS is next, no one provide even gloves or masks.
I use to quilt, until permanent hand damage from surgery. Tried my hand at it yesterday, while it’s not virus proof it is dust and allergy, the mailman was tickled to receive his even if it was imperfect. Has bad seasonal allergies.
Google it. You'll find quite a few examples of police officers dying of the flu this January.
This virus essentially the flu and the only people threatened with death have underlying health issues, respiratory problems or flat out overweight. Thus my comment is accurate and you are a moron.
Are these the same officers that blindly follow the orders of their governor or mayor and enforce illegal and Unconstitutional orders?
