SARATOGA NY (WRGB) - A local teenager is spreading joy through his community by encouraging others to write letters to people during the coronavirus epidemic; specifically those in nursing and assisted living homes.
Sahil Swali, a junior at Shenendahowa High School, pitched his message to the Facebook community last week in a short video shared hundreds of times.
Im just asking everyone to write one letter, just one, to a nursing home or a doctor or a nurse just to let them know that we care. He pleads.

Imagine an elderly person confined to her room, unable to be visited by family.
I don’t know if this is at all, a good idea.
The virus can live on things, for longer than one entire week.
My thought exactly. We could be mailing them their demise.
That’s very thoughtful. Maybe a small hospital would have the time to photograph those letters and post them online. A nurse or CNA could show the patient the personalized correspondence.
As another poster just said, actual paper to actual skin may not be safe right now. It’s still a good idea anytime.
Not just for a “Make A Wish” or Lonely Christmas situation.
How about Bill Gates or maybe Apple donating tablets to residents so they could have face time with family that are under house arrest so to speak..
Just a thought.
Sending mail, ugh.
I don’t like to fetch my mail these days, especially if it’s local, but I’ve always washed my hands after handling mail anyway.
A more sterile idea would be ask for the activity director’s contact email, send encouraging messages to the patients and let them get printed out or read aloud.
Call someone you know in a nursing home.
Some facilities are offering video chats or actual robots that can wheel up to patients with screen time.
So...do you think people are disinfecting Taco Time bags dropped off at my MIL assisted living place? Shirt tail relatives take her bakery from grocery store and fast food stuff... we’ve wondered about it, but are not going to demand they stop...she’s near 94...
Call them what?
How many of those envelopes will be licked?
How many letters kissed?
I’m probably paranoid, but I would not want those letters in my facility until it can be ascertained there is no risk...even the flu.
Oh thats good!
Less is more. This teen wants every Tom Dick and Harry to send their filthy letters that they lick to nursing homes.
I’ve seen several news stories about families having to connect by viewing loved ones through facility windows.
One of my friends recently had to place both parents in assisted living (now in lockdown) and they are lucky enough to have a 2nd floor balcony that the kids can stand under and visit - this week she took them bubbles to blow, which they loved.
Obviously this would not work with severely demented people who might drink the solution. Trust me, I know.
My step-daughter is an administrator in a small locked-down nursing home. She goes around daily taking pictures of the residents holing up whiteboards with messages to their loved ones and posts them on Facebook.
My step-daughter is a nursing home administrator. They spray and wipe down everything that comes in.
Thx...hopefully they are doing that...
Our mail is NOT run under UV... virus can live on paper more than 24 hours... Then there's the mailman - with cross pollination of delivered mail and mail just picked up...
This is a sweet idea that's absolutely dreadful.
Virus can live on plastic for up to three days...
