The poet Wilhelm Müller -- I think of him as Bill Miller -- served in the Napoleonic wars on the Austrian side. Franz Schubert, at four-foot-ten, was too short for the draft and missed out on the wars. Frannie set a lot of Bill's poems to music, including two complete poetry/song cycles, "The Fair Maid of the Mill" and the famous "Winter Journey," a collection of 24 of the most depressing songs ever written. This is the first song of "Winter Journey." The tenor, Peter Schreier, passed on just recently. Christoph Eschenbach, otherwise known as an orchestra conductor, accompanies. The modulation from D minor to D Major for the last verse is magical and heartbreaking at the same time.

Schubert: "Good Night"

Texas Jim Robertson fought with the Marines in the Pacific during WWII. His first song is about a book that except for its last page, is full of hooey. The next, said to have been inspired by light from lamps aboard a ship being refracted through the sea spray, looks forward into the postwar years.

Given his involvement in the anti-war movement, people might be surprised that John Fogerty served a year in the military. His politics might be awful but I have always loved his music.

Gary Lewis of Gary Lewis and the Playboys served two years.

I remember his final TV appearance before he was drafted.

I've posted Aileen Standley's version of this tune on this site a few times on FR. Seger Ellis would join the Army Air Force during World War II.

Hi Kathy.

Elvis Presley is the obvious pick. I will add guitarist Toy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band just because “Heard it in a Love Song” is among my favorites.
