RIP Lee
Forgot about George Jones!! One of the greatest ever!! The Grand Tour.....
Billy Joel
Glenn Miller wasn’t known as a singer, but he did participate in the chorus on some of his recordings with groups like the Charleston Chasers. I believe he vocalized on the Miami Royal Palm Orchestra’s version of “Together” (1928), my favorite version of that tune, but unfortunately, it hasn’t come to Youtube.
A lot of people think Jimi was some flower-power hippy type, nothing could have been further from the truth:
Jimi Hendrix was extremely apolitical by the standards of the 1960s, and he was more closely affiliated with the apolitical wing of the hippie counterculture than he was with the major political movements of the day. For example, as late as 1967, Hendrix was a hawk on the issue of the Vietnam War. In a 1967 interview with a Dutch magazine, Hendrix said,
“Did you send the Americans away when they landed in Normandy? That was also interference... but that was concerning your own skin. The Americans are fighting in Vietnam for a completely free world. As soon as they move out, they will be at the mercy of the communists. For that matter, the yellow danger [China] should not be underestimated. Of course, war is horrible, but at present it’s the only guarantee of peace.”
Happy Birthday Jesus
Uh...no.
(from Wikipedia) ""Despite the Vietnam War and the draft, Joel performed no military service because he was the sole provider for his mother and sister, the selective service gave him a draft exemption."
Featuring Hubert Humphrey, Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon and Johnny Cash.
Night and Day--Paul Whiteman & His Concert Orchestra (1933)
Me, too! Forgot all about him. I couldn’t believe he made such a comeback in his career, when lots of people thought it was all over for him. Annnnnd, he came back better than ever, imo. I loved the guy. He was sooooo good. A little ashamed about it now, but I was very selfish at the time, when he died, and could only think about all the good music we’d be missing out on “now that he was gone.”
I’ll put it on the mantelpiece next to the Carriage Clock. :)
No, but should have!
Bassist Percy Heath was one of the Tuskegee Airmen, but the war ended before he could deploy.
Oops. I thought he had.
Not a singer, but one of the greatest drummers ever, Steve Gadd, performing with the US Army Field Band.
