Doctor, former Kansas governor says coronavirus patients 'doing better' in testing with anti-malaria drug

Dr. Jeff Colyer on the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 President Trump calls the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine a ‘game changer’ in treating the coronavirus; reaction and analysis from former Kansas governor, practicing surgeon Dr. Jeff Colyer.

Anti-malaria drugs ike hydroxychloroquine -- which are being used to treat coronavirus (COVID-19) patients -- are showing positive results, former Kansas governor and practicing surgeon Dr. Jeff Colyer said Wednesday.

Appearing on "America's Newsroom" with host Ed Henry, Colyer said that data from testing at the University of Kansas and in the Kansas City community have proven the drug to have a "safe safety profile."

"I'm one of those people that has had both the white coat and the blue coat on as a policymaker, and it is an important balance," he explained. "[The] white coat in me would love to have more standardized tests with this. However, we have a lot of data, and in fact, about 21 percent of all prescriptions in the United States are used off-label."

"We now have a couple of studies, really, they're large case reports, that show that people who were on this medication have fewer symptoms and are doing better," he continued further. "We're going to be getting a lot more data over the next couple of weeks."

That said, Colyer noted that this was the only drug physicians could turn to at the moment.

"But, the important thing is as a policymaker you are wanting to help people. As a doctor, I want to help people as well, but we have to get them the right drug. And, this is, frankly, the only one that is in our arsenal," he told Henry.

I did not mention ‘stable’, the virus replicates by taking over the RNA to DNA transfer process so by zinc destroying that exchange process the virus cannot mutate to avoid the way it reproduces.

Okay, then I now know you are speaking from a vantage point of knowledge. Good to know that is not the case. Thanks. 8>)

Fellow Freeper, we are all, well most all, here to help each other. We old farts do that as best we can from a lifetime of experiences.

This entire scene is now causing me to wonder why hydroxychloroquine and zinc supplementation is not tested for use on the aids virus, and flu viruses and, well you get the gist. Oddly, this was used by a few physicians to treat SARS and MERS, with success. When it comes to big pharma money talks and ethics walks

No doubt, but they also spend big money in the process getting to the point where a profit can be realized. Great profits but lots of risks as well I assume. It’s times like these that you appreciate them more, but still complain about the prices.

The stories I could tell you about big pharma and the FDA would curl your hair. Corruption is endemic.

No doubt, but then I think corruption is pandemic in this country anymore, in all areas.

A vaccine is NOT a cure, does not guarantee you won't get infected (witness the flu vaccine which in a good year has about a 50% effective rate) and does not stop you from transmitting the virus if it is harbored in your sinuses.

Maybe not, but just as for flu it will save millions of lives around the world over the next decade.

By the way, how do you maintain natural immunity to a mutating virus?

I don’t mean to slight Dr. Fauci, but I wish Dr. Marc Siegel was the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. There is just something about his personality that is naturally calming.

Oh it will? Really? Where's the data to prove this? Did you get it from a CDC fact sheet?

Show me the peer reviewed double blind clinical studies proving the efficacy of the flu vaccine (Not some study that gathered a bunch of data from various publications about hospitalization rates). Show me the data that proves areas with higher rates of vaccination have lower rates of flu cases. Best of luck in your search.

By the way, how do you maintain natural immunity to a mutating virus?

Oh, yeah right...that little tidbit they feed the masses to explain why at best the flu vaccine is only 50% effective.

Ooopsie...guess we picked the wrong strain this time. But don't worry, next year we'll do better.

I'll tell you how you maintain natural immunity - by allowing normal healthy human beings let their own bodies create it naturally to a LIVE, REPLICATING VIRUS. Not some extracted protein or a killed or attenuated virus that your body does not recognize as a real threat.

I guess you are conceding that the vaccine does NOT prevent the ability to spread the virus. If so then can we at least agree to allow free citizens to choose whether or not they want to receive the vaccine, rather than trying to get Daddy Government to force it on those who don't want it?

As you probably know there are ethical problems with withholding flu vaccine so the studies tend to be more observational, but they are compelling and rely on more than hospitalization rates.

Now show me the peer reviewed double blind clinical studies proving antibodies created in response to a live, replicating virus provide better protection than ones created in response to a vaccine created for that same strain.

I guess you are conceding that the vaccine does NOT prevent the ability to spread the virus.

Prevent? No. Attenuate? Yes.

then can we at least agree to allow free citizens to choose whether or not they want to receive the vaccine, rather than trying to get Daddy Government to force it on those who don't want it?

I don't know where you live but nowhere in the US requires flu vaccination as far as I know.

Explain to this old man how a virus can mutate a defense against the way hydroxychloroquine and zinc work to stop the reproductive process of the virus, any virus.

Don't know how the drugs work or how effective they are but the question implies they should be effective against all viruses.

Or does the mechanism only work on this strain of COVID-19?

Is there any virus which replicates without using the system of ribosomes in the living cell?
