After being courted by Trump, African Americans, Latinos face economic blow from coronavirus

WASHINGTON - The financial hardship caused by the coronavirus outbreak could fall particularly hard on African Americans and Latinos, undoing economic gains President Donald Trump has touted in his outreach to those key voting blocs ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

With job cuts hitting U.S. states as governors and companies order offices and workplaces closed, African Americans and Latinos are particularly vulnerable because they more often have jobs that cannot be done at home.

“That will make them more severely impacted by an extended coronavirus shutdown of the economy,” said Jay Shambaugh, a White House economist during Democratic President Barack Obama’s administration.

Labor Department data shows that just 19.7% of African Americans and 16.2% of Hispanics said they could work at home in 2017 and 2018, compared with 29.9% of whites.

The department’s most recent data on unemployment benefits showed a nationwide surge in new filings, with many states reporting layoffs in service industries like hotels and restaurants, according to the department’s March 19 report.

Those are industries where African Americans and Latinos make up outsized shares of employment, including hotels where the two groups make up nearly half of employees.

While African Americans and Hispanics overwhelmingly disapprove of Trump over his immigration policies and handling of race relations, the Trump campaign has increased its outreach to those groups in hopes of picking off enough votes to win potentially razor-thin contests in electoral swing states.

Blacks & Latinos do not deserve special consideration.

Either we are all Americans or we are not.

Well there’s a stretch. Like those folks are going to blame Trump for CV. Not when they get a check in their hands, they won’t. Does Reuters actually think that PDJT speaking to a massive stay-at-home TV audience isn’t going to mention whose idea it was to send them $$$$$$?

Nancy was more concerned about trying to fund black baby abortions and pushing the green new deal than helping African Americans or Latinos.

They should learn to code or farm.

Put a seed in the ground, cover it with dirt, throw some water on it...Much easier than learning to code.

Or they can just sit at home waiting for the unemployment/welfare check listening to the record player.

Not when they get a check in their hands, they won’t.

Every American (with the exception of the 1%) were looking forward to getting their check! (I already had made plans for mine.)

People will not forget it was the DEMOCRATS who obstructed the bailout bill.

Roto-Reuters is at it again. It’s always about race, race, race.

Yes, the listed people are facing economic hardship, but so is nearly everyone that is not self-sufficiently wealthy. The best way to get past this is to get the economy working again. Then everyone has the “right” to work or not, to succeed or not. If you’re frightened by the virus, stay home. if you’re frighted by poverty, go to work. It’s not hard to understand.

Just my $.02

Agreed. Some polls have revealed that legal Latin American immigrants very much favour stricter immigration laws over open borders as do blacks.

Spot-on. I might add that PDJT will never allow them to forget. This whole thing was his idea, his bill, his momentum, his threat to veto the porkulus Dem option. Credit is due.
