~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Hunter Liggett, California

CAhunterliggett3

Originally designated Hunter Liggett Military Reservation in 1941, the installation is named for Lieutenant General Hunter Liggett (1857 - 1935). General Hunter Liggett commanded the 41st National Guard Division, and later, the First Corps of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War 1. He also served as Chief of Staff for General John Pershing. In 1975, the reservation was re-designated Fort Hunter Liggett Military Installation.

CAhunterliggett6

The varied terrain and weather conditions at Fort Hunter Liggett, provides unique opportunity for continuing training and testing, and makes the installation a valuable asset for future armed forces land use needs.

CAhunterliggett5

Fort Hunter Liggett is recognized as the military's premier Total Force Training Center. Along with its sub-installation Parks Reserve Forces Training Area, it offers excellent training opportunities to all U.S. military components and those of allied nations. At 165,000 acres, Fort Hunter Liggett is the U.S. Army Reserve's largest training installation, and it is well suited to large-scale joint exercises.

CAhunterliggett4

Significant training infrastructure improvements were made including several Tactical Training Bases (TTBs - analogous to Forward Operating Bases), a wired "shoot-house", improvements to the hardened landing strip capable of handling larger Air Force transport planes, and a 7-mile live-fire convoy course, the US Army's only such training area capable of handing 360-degree fire up to .50 caliber.

Memories. Recalled for “training” at Hunter Liggett June 1972. Hot. Very hot, and the only thing they had for former active duty MP’s was fire fighting duty. Sucked. Found a small cafe that served beer down the road, and made that place home for the next two weeks of required “Training”.

Enjoyed the swimming hole at the base of the mountain on the way to Carmel. Very nice. Lots more, but that’s enough.

No apology necessary.

Working at home there’s no time clock, no lunch break, etc. to help keep you aware of the time. It’s pay week and you’re probably up to your eyeballs in the usual mess. :-)

Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...nice walking weather for you and Penny to stretch your legs in the neighborhood?

My first day of working from home. It’s gonna take some getting used to...every little bit I need something that’s not on my table and I have to go find it.

I personally know every square inch of those 165,000 acres. I remember doing night movements and sometimes you could see the Hearst mansion. Great installation for hunting and fishing when you were not walking around with an 80lb rucksack on your back.

Spent a couple of months there in 1979 taking part in a bake-off between the A-10 and Cobra attack helicopter in killing tanks. Very interesting place - wish I would have had more time off to explore....
