German police arrest man over high-speed rail tampering

A man in Germany has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly loosening bolts on a high-speed railway track. The stretch of track affected was just before a bridge outside Frankfurt.

A train driver noticed "something unusual" while crossing the bridge early on Friday. Several trains had already passed over the section before the issue was discovered. Rail operator Deutsche Bahn described the incident as "sabotage". . . .

According to German news site Der Spiegel, the rails were five centimetres further apart than usual. This could have caused trains to derail and even send them plunging off the bridge.

5 cm further apart

That's two inches, for those with a recent government education.

Qom, the capital of Qom province, is located 125 kilometers south of Tehran, on a low plain. The shrine of Fatimeh Masumeh, the sister of Imam Reza, is located in this city, which is considered by Shiʿa Muslims holy. The city is located in the boundary of the central desert of Iran (Kavir-e Markazi).

Ah, the Persian desert, the GEM of the Middle East.

.

.

NOT.

It could be LeBeau. Robert Clary is still with us. But he’s 94 years old. Maybe that’s why the bolts were only loosened, and not removed.

In a statement, prosecutors said the man is "strongly suspected of having removed bolts on 80 metres (260 feet) of the rail on a bridge between Cologne and Frankfurt".

I've ridden the high speed train on that route multiple times.

They’ll say the perp had ‘mental issues’.

Being a concentration camp survivor, he’d almost have a legitimate beef with the Jerrys at one time.

Trains are a core means of transport in Germany...and they’re incredibly insecure. You just get on one just like a bus, with your luggage which nobody checks. It’s ripe for jihadi’s. I’m surprised they’ve not experienced more attacks already.

Too bad Germany does not have a death penalty.

They sort of overused it in the 1930s and 1940s...

So it was more than just putting a pfennig on the track ...

That isn’t just loosening some bolts to achieve that amount of road spread.

He probably removed the bolts completely. And then a couple of trains had driven over that area of tracks. If each train pushed each track out about 1 cm in both directions then you might get those results. Extrapolating, after a few more trains spread the tracks a bit more you get the derailment.

Thankfully he didn’t do it in summer. The temperature is mild at the moment.
Continuous Welded Rail gets a life of it’s own during temperature extremes.

Robert Clary is still with us.

He lost his whole family in The Holocaust.

I once read a biography of Clary. One thing he said was that most people are not good. So cherish the ones who are. That always stuck with me.

5 centimeters—— is 1.96 Inches. 2 inches on the spread of a high speed rails, damned deadly.
