An adviser to Italy's minister of health, Professor Walter Ricciardi, said the coronavirus death rate in Italy may be higher than in other countries not only because of demographics -- Italy has the second oldest population in the world -- but also because of the way Italy records deaths of those who have tested positive for the coronavirus.
"The way in which we code deaths in our country is very generous in the sense that all the people who die in hospitals with the coronavirus are deemed to be dying of the coronavirus," Prof. Riccardi told The Telegraph.
"On re-evaluation by the National Institute of Health, only 12 percent of death certificates have shown a direct causality from coronavirus, while 88 percent of patients who have died have at least one pre-morbidity - many had two or three," the professor explains.
The professor is not alone, as others say it's way too early to know the true mortality rate so long as the number of mild cases in the country remains unknown.
Italy's older population may also explain the large number of deaths being attributed to the coronavirus.
"The age of our patients in hospitals is substantially older - the median is 67, while in China it was 46," the professor says. "So essentially the age distribution of our patients is squeezed to an older age and this is substantial in increasing the lethality."
A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that 87 percent of the deaths in Italy attributed to the coronavirus and 40 percent of known infections have been people 70 years of age or older.
The coronavirus obviously poses a threat to the health and well-being of people all around the world, but it's probably a good idea to balance the panic and all the dire forecasts with a little bit of critical thinking.
It will not be long before many, many of those who are admitted to the Hospital will be given one or more of the medications soon to be approved for treating this Chinese Virus. They will be sent home and told to rest for a week or so while the medications do their job.
Well, since obviously they were still living with the other medical conditions, and they didn’t die until they caught the corona virus, then it would make sense to attribute it to the virus, the presumption being that if they had not caught the virus, they would still be living with their other medical conditions which were not fatal, but still disabling.
And if they did develop pneumonia as a result of corona, then yes, I would consider the corona responsible since they didn’t have the pneumonia before.
I can see their reasoning.
Everything. Please re-read my comment #26. It's self-explanatory.
In the name of politics the world has lost its courage. I am not surprised so much except where we are concerned.
Its my understanding. (Perhaps wrong) that the many of thr death are from secondary infections (pneumonia etc) due to the virus, not simply the virus itself.
The Media has been hiding this FACT for their Chinese masters .
It tell us how deeply the Chinese own Western media .
The first wave of sick were Chinese invaders who
infected the Locals. Italians must rid themselves of the Chinese and EU globalists .
“Italy has the second oldest population in the world.”
“87 percent of the deaths in Italy attributed to the coronavirus and 40 percent of known infections have been people 70 years of age or older.”
Also, a YUGE percentage of Italian men are chain smokers and have been since childhood. (The majority of WuFlu fatalities are men.)
Italian family homes often consist of many generations living in close quarters. (So much for social distancing.)
Italy’s healthcare system sucks.
IT SEEMS THE FACT THAT MILLIONS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS MOVED INTO ITALY OVER THE YEARS WITH NATURAL RESISTANCE TO MANY DISEASES AND THE ITALIANS HAVE NONE. NO ONE IN THE ITALIAN GOV’T RECOGNIZES THAT. WHAT AN INJUSTICE TO THEIR SENIORS.
“There we go. That is what has been missing in all this. Some context.
How many people die in Italy on a normal day? What are the causes of death of those who aren’t listed as being from the Chinese virus?”
How about the stats on how many in Italy have died from the more common flu? Without a starting point none of the stats on the Chinese Virus makes sense.
I think it is deliberate and one reason why the numbers of infected and dead in America from the common flu this season (32,000,000 infected almost 20,000 dead) are not mentioned as a comparison to the China Virus deaths.
The two people, Ages 39 and 44, who died in NOLA from CV and had
no pre-existing conditions don’t give me very much faith in the
“it’s only the elderly who have to worry” argument.
Could This Explain Why the Coronavirus Death Rate in Italy is so High?
lack of Ventilators. Like the US.
DunningKruger effect, the write exhibits it.
This is the link to the Monthly Death Statistics of Italy. The question would be are they dramatically higher now.
600-650,000 deaths per year in Italy.
Or is this just a more virulent form of flu?

Looks like normally about 2000 per day die.
“Bottom line is, most of those people in Italy wouldnt be dead no if there was no chinavirus.”
Yep, that’s the EASY way to tell the impact. How many people died in Italy a year ago in March? How many people died (and will die) this year, in Italy, in March?
Compare the 2 numbers and you’ve pretty got the effect from Coronavirus. I don’t know of comparisons like that, but the Wuhan-type stories (funerals and crematoriums swamped, etc.) tells me that a lot of people are dying there of Coronavirus. Also, the newspaper video of the obits going from 1.5 pages to 10 pages in the one city kind of hinted at a slight problem, too.
“Bottom line this problem arose due in large part to maximization of profit by Western business owners.”
Well, isn’t that what business owners do? But who’s supposed to be guarding against it?
“It will not be long before many, many of those who are admitted to the Hospital will be given one or more of the medications soon to be approved for treating this Chinese Virus. They will be sent home and told to rest for a week or so while the medications do their job.”
Ever heard of the FDA?
Italy ping.
Could be worse. Italy could have been reporting death tolls using fractional numbers for COVID-19.
93% of those who show up for testing who think they have the virus dont. Now we can all fall under this hypochondriac syndrome-it just shows the power of advertising or media-repeat something enough and perception becomes reality.
Now there is a home testing kit available for these mentally ill hypochondriacs:
At-home coronavirus tests now available, companies say (Fox News)
As coronavirus testing in the U.S. continues to lag behind that in other highly affected countries such as South Korea, several domestic startups are reportedly launching the first at-home tests.
The products have been greenlit by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under new expedited guidelines to help combat the virus, according to Stat, a health care industry news outlet.
One such test provider is Nurx, a San Francisco-based company best known for home testing products for sexually transmitted infections and birth control, now offers testing kits for COVID-19 through the mail for $181 after prospective customers fill out an online form with their symptoms.
We dont look for the severity of symptoms, only the presence of them. They can range from mild to severe, Nurx spokeswoman Allison Hoffman told SFGate.com. But, people with truly severe symptoms should also seek immediate care. In terms of temperature in particular, we determine a fever is 100.4 [degrees] plus.
After filling out the online survey, Nurx will determine if testing is necessary based on the persons symptoms and will mail the test via expedited shipping.
Nurx can give customers lab results within 48 hours of receiving the test, SFGate reported.
We are pivoting from our prior service lines to make this available, Chris Hall, senior clinical adviser for Nurx, told Stat. Its a heavy lift, but we think its important.

Today we are introducing the first #COVID19 home testing and online consultation service. Were eager to safely connect people with certain symptoms and risk factors with testing and medical care.
