In the end, this flu season will be of greater interest to social psychologists and social and political historians than to virologists and epidemiologists. Among an innumerate and paranoid population obsessed with its health, and which believes that the role of the government is to solve all problems, it was easy for the media to trigger a panic that would take down the markets and capsize the economy. No public official or CEO can risk being viewed as irresponsible, and the decisions theyve felt obliged to take have had devastating economic consequences for the majority of Americans.
There are two ways of looking at the case fatality rate of Covid-19.[i] Originally, some high rates were reported: 3.2% (this figure, from WHO, was repeated by Bill Gates in an alarmist New England Journal of Medicine editorial), 2%, and 1.4%. By the end of February, as the virus moved out Hubei province, estimates of the mortality rate were much lower. As Anthony Fauci, et. al. reported in the NEJM on the 28th, the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1%. The authors go on to conclude that this suggests that the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.
In the deluge of coverage of the epidemic, how many reporters on TV or in print have bothered to repeat this information from the Director of the NHIs National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

Good read for the Fearpers around here, though I'm sure they'll be along any minute to tell us all how wrong this is, and how irresponsible it is to suggest that this isn't (Ebola*Anthrax)^Smallpox.
The media has really become the world’s enemy. That reporter Peter the Prick at yesterday’s news conference was a shining example.
Cant get This is a test, this is only a test!..... out of my mind.

What do you as a family member or other medical layperson, need to stabilize an elder or immune compromised home care patient, when medical care systems become paralyzed?
Is there a recipe for an indigestible equivalent of IV saline solution?
We'd wish to ask Dr. Robert Cade, the inventor of Gatorade, but he died in 2007.
I've seen and used this for as a DIY electrolyte replacement drink for a while (I use NuSalt for the potassium chloride):

Directions: add ingredients separately or mix a large batch together (i.e. the gallon size) and then just measure out the "total" amount listed under 16oz or 1 liter into a water bottle, and then fill the remainder of the 16 oz. or 1 liter bottle with water.
The issue is being able to care for those who need treatment. Even if the numbers of severe illness/fatalities are the same, flu deaths do not happen at the same period. Its spread out over many months.
Its all about the curve.
If you can't find the resources to treat those people with two trillion odd bucks at your disposal, something is seriously wrong.
I cane across LiquidIV last summer and it really helped with replacing electrolytes after long hot walks. Theyre single-use powdered packets to mix with water. It also helps with hangovers...so Ive heard...;). I used to order from amazon but it is now at our Costco. Its about a dollar a packet but I have found it a dollar very well spent. Read up on it and see if maybe you might be interested.

Oh, meant to add it would be very helpful for someone with a fever. Dehydration, especially in the elderly, is so dangerous.
FAKE NEWS!!! I didn’t see Wild Turkey 101 mentioned anywhere in the article.
“The CDC estimates the death totals for the two epidemics in the US to be 118,000 in 57-8 and 100,000 in 68-9. The number of Covid-19 deaths in this country is now about 147.”
No the number of Covid-19 deaths is now 281. 69,000 deaths between 11-1957 and 3-1958 is reported for the Asian flu epidemic of 1957-58, see below. That is a rate of 575 per day. Italy had 627 deaths yesterday and we have 5 times their population. If the course of the disease in the US is similar to what is happening in Italy we would have 3,000 deaths per day, and very few people find that acceptable. The swine flu of 2009 was about 30 per day (11,000 over one year). I do agree with the conclusion that this flu might be less severe than the Asian flu, and we did not shut down the economy for it. I think the caution is because Covid19 might be much worse than the ‘57 flu, closer to the 1918 Spanish flu. Also in the 1950’s we didn’t use seat belts, etc.

“capsize the economy”
Hank Johnson warned about this.
The bloggers at the “economic collapse blog” are probably going “See? See?? We were right all along!!”
Irrelevant arguments are irrelevant. If the medical system is overwhelmed the “death rate” isn’t the issue, and substantially more people than who get this illness need medical care at any given time.
Flu cases also seem to have a faster recovery rate and perhaps less intubation time when necessary?
And thats what they are doing now along with stopping the spread. Which is in return being called an over reaction.
If you want to see some real “doom porn”, to to zero hedge. They have been predicting imminent catastrophe for years. It’s about all they do. Since many of the comments seem to come from young men on that site, I wonder how many are cowering in fear waiting for the big collapse rather than living their lives in the here and now.
Good point
