Kenny Rogers, country music icon, dies at 81.

Kenny Rogers, a longtime star of country music, died Friday night, according to a statement posted by his family. He was 81. Known for such hits as “The Gambler,” “Lady,” “Islands in the Stream,” and “Lucille,” Rogers died peacefully at home in Sandy Springs, Ga., of natural causes at 10:25 p.m., the statement said.

Me and my family vacationed in Rarotonga (Cook Islands) in March 1984 and Kenny happened to be there as well, staying at the main five star hotel there (which was a short distance from where we were) and there was a little publicity given to him being there. In any event, we were talking with someone who said he went to use the tennis court at the main hotel and just as he and his friend were going in to use it, guess who just came off (presumably after using it a little himself).

I saw him perform with the ‘First Edition’ at the Chautauqua Amphitheater way back when I was in high school in the early 70’s.
During the summer, Thursdays were special event performances - so growing up down the shoreline (Chautauqua Lake, Chautauqua Co. NY) we were treated to many a show from different acts over the years. Many of us local kids had jobs there during the summer.

He told the story of this record. It was a minor regional hit in 1958. He decided to not sign autographs because he wanted to be cool and everything, like some of the big stars.

His next hit came 10 years later....he signed autographs..
