Dr Anthony Fauci has rebuked Donald Trump's claim that anti-malaria drug chloroquine could be a game-changer in the fight against COVID-19.
Dr Facui, who is a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, made the claim during an interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN Thursday evening.
'There's no magic drug for coronavirus right now,' the top doctor told Cooper.
Earlier in the day, Trump told media that there had been positive results after doctors trialled chloroquine on COVID-19 patients, and suggested the drug could be a game-changer.
'It's shown very, very encouraging early results. We're going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately. It's been approved,' he said.
However, Dr Fauci said on CNN just a few hours later: 'Let me put it into perspective for the viewers .. there has been anecdotal non-proven data that it [chloroquine] works... but when you have an uncontrolled trial you can never definitely say that it works'.
He repeated his caution on Friday in an interview with Today, saying: 'Even though the information is anecdotal that they may work, we need to prove it so people would get the right drug that's safe and effective.
'What we're saying is these are drugs that have some suggestion that they may work,' he went on, but that controlled trials needed to be done to prove that they are effective.
The University of Minnesota is looking for people who have been in contact with a known positive case of COVID-19 to volunteer for a trial to test Hydroxychloroquine and see if it is effective in preventing people from catching the virus.
They need 1,500 people to take part in the trial and so far have 150.

As a scientist I am quite aware of this bent of "establisho-bureaucro-empowered-let's follow the process" to dismiss all new solutions to new problems as "anecdotal."
They forget that there is a huge difference between idle speculation, proven false hypotheses, tentative hypotheses for which there is some supporting evidence, but still need for additional proof, and firmly supported and established theory. That is because it is there nature to be unable to deal with uncertainty.
So you are seeing a conflict between a man who thrives on chaos and one who abides chaos. The latter always dominate and try to cast out the former until circumstance requires the former. They needs structure and predictability.
Daily Mail lost to Trump in court. They have attacked him since.
President Trump only said it was a game changer, not a miracle drug.
There is nothing at all wrong with the President being hopeful and optimistic, and there is nothing at all wrong with Dr. Fauci being realistic and a doctor.
Chinamedia attacking Trump again. Mischaracterizing the what he and officials say and feel.

Both men were doing their job. Nothing Fauci said contradicted Trump. The headline is misleading because Fauci finished the sentence with ‘...right now’.
Let’s not become part of the problem.
Anthony Fauci should wear a long black robe that hides his face and carry a scythe. He never has anything positive to say. I know this is a situation that demands the truth, but there are reports of success with chloroquine from overseas. Just because we haven’t tested it doesn’t mean it hasn’t been tested.
Perhaps our testing requirements are a little to stringent and need to be relaxed.
He never said it was a miracle drug. Good grief ... everyone just wants to slam Trump no matter what he says and does.

CDC and Fauci: Chloroquine not invented here and doesn’t fit with our vaccine emphasis so we’ll slow walk it.
They’ve had a lot of success with it in France is what Trump should have said.

Fauci didn’t ‘Rebuke’ Trump. Trump never said it was a miracle drug, but that it was promising. Obviously he knows that Fauci knows it takes testing and verification.
He's a media pig, on ever network. Tell me when he actually does any work. There are those that do, and those that talk. He's proving to be the latter, and as such his over all judgement is suspect. He certainly doesn't have any judgment with respect to the president when he runs his pie hole.
I would like to ask that we stop posting articles from this British tabloid. They distort and lie about anything POTUS says.
