Dr Anthony Fauci has rebuked Donald Trump's claim that anti-malaria drug chloroquine could be a game-changer in the fight against COVID-19.
Dr Facui, who is a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, made the claim during an interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN Thursday evening.
'There's no magic drug for coronavirus right now,' the top doctor told Cooper.
Earlier in the day, Trump told media that there had been positive results after doctors trialled chloroquine on COVID-19 patients, and suggested the drug could be a game-changer.
'It's shown very, very encouraging early results. We're going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately. It's been approved,' he said.
However, Dr Fauci said on CNN just a few hours later: 'Let me put it into perspective for the viewers .. there has been anecdotal non-proven data that it [chloroquine] works... but when you have an uncontrolled trial you can never definitely say that it works'.
He repeated his caution on Friday in an interview with Today, saying: 'Even though the information is anecdotal that they may work, we need to prove it so people would get the right drug that's safe and effective.
'What we're saying is these are drugs that have some suggestion that they may work,' he went on, but that controlled trials needed to be done to prove that they are effective.
The University of Minnesota is looking for people who have been in contact with a known positive case of COVID-19 to volunteer for a trial to test Hydroxychloroquine and see if it is effective in preventing people from catching the virus.
They need 1,500 people to take part in the trial and so far have 150.

Remember, the media is spinning what the doctor said.
True but he does like to hear himself talk.
Yes, I recall that. Seems like Fauci maybe did not get the memo on that? I am not the biggest fan of the FDA at the best of times so...
Me thinks youre right.
I don’t hear that often !
President Trump is correct in his gut and it will be proven out. Ive been very excited about this too.

Me too! Before this was in the news I saw something( maybe here) called my doc. He looked into it and ordered the “cocktail” chloroquine and azithromycin for me and said he was getting some for himself! Just in case there’s a run on the stuff like TP
I imagine every politically competent governor will get manufacturing of at least hydroxychloroquine going in their state, and secure a maintenance dose for everyone who works with the elderly, with diabetics, with heart patients, for EMTs etc. As scarcity fades the market can most efficiently handle distribution.
Education about usage can be handled as quarantines have been.
“There is a gigantic difference between something being used as a PROPHYLACTIC “
We desperately need a prophylactic for our health care worker who are not given masks to wear at Ground Zero- the hospitals of America. Shanghai and Hong Kong require everybody to wear a mask when out in public in those cities. Doctors on my street- one who is an ER Pediatric doctor- told me that they are only to put on a mask if they suspect the patient may have Covid-19, because the hospital says there are not enough masks, so they must ration. This is a big-city hospital run by highly paid administrators. If we aren’t going to give the doctors and nurses, techs, etc. masks in the ER and most other places, they should be given the option to take the prophylactic medication to protect themselves. Let Dr. Fauci go work in the ER without a mask and gloves.
Nope, totally fictitious!!
Fauci summarized Trump’s statement as based on Positive INTUITION. “I’ve been right alot” Trump
Clearly in an emergency situation it makes sense to shift the testing rules to avoid withholding treatment from patients. Also, the doctors doing the research used an objective test of the drugs efficacy, actual viral load measurement, which allows determination of effectiveness with smaller populations.
As an example, for some other kinds of drugs it is difficult to determine effectiveness without a large and carefully controlled test population due to the difficulty in measuring the outcome. Consider the problem of measuring the effectiveness of an anti-depressant, where the patients feelings are what needs to be measured.
Thanx. Seems to me that there ought to a thread specifically dedicated to this research. Maybe we could get links to all of the papers on the subject.
Is hydroxycloroquine over the counter ?
RE: Is hydroxycloroquine over the counter ?
It has to be prescribed.
“ANECDOTAL” to Dr Fauci means “coincidental”. No proof that it worked, even it it did work. He won’t accept that it works until years long trials are conducted.
“My mistake! You are correct!”
no biggie ... you obviously understand the issue, unlike 80% of FReepers and 99% of “reporters” ...
We are not talking about a tranquilizer here, we are talking a drug that may prevent death, if it doesn't you can pretty much know it didn't work. Why withhold treatment from someone who is dying anyway and they know the risk?
The doctor got called back up and told everyone that there was no substantial difference between what he and the President were saying...that, while not tested under rigorous conditions, it may or may not work and we know the up and down sides of it because it's been around for awhile.
And the supposed "rebuke" was actually said before the President spoke, then others tried to ding the President for saying he felt good about the possibilities - requiring Fauci to come back and tell them they had no reason to get on the President's case.
Sounds like a hit piece because Peter the Dick from ConCast got bitch-slapped for hounding the President for being optimistic.
