We live in a time when a pandemic of fear is threatening to wreck the fabric of society and degrade the enterprise of civilization. Fear and anxiety can do more damage to the human immune system than almost any other factor
Fear is the biggest enemy of mankind. It drives us apart. It causes us to misunderstand one another and it leads to war and more death and destruction than any other factor in our psychological make up. It paralyzes our very being and stifles our creativity and imagination.
With the advent of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), we have the chance to change our entire outlook and approach to human health. It is a mutated strain of the flu. Each flu season we have a different mutated strain of the flu, which is one reason that the seasonal flu vaccine is not particularly effective. This year’s flu vaccine is usually for prior strains as in the year before.
But it is also a time of great opportunity, the opportunity to change things for the better turning the demons of fear into the “better angels of our nature.”

Yes, but on the bright side it brings to a lot of Americans something that is lacking in their lives-excitement.
My wife and I cancelled our doctors visit this week as we are over 80, and have underlying healthconditions.
This morning, Just got this in from our doctors office:
Dear Patient,
A team member has been confirmed COVID-19 positive in our Scituate office, so out of an abundance of caution, and in keeping with CDC guidance and our infectious disease expert’s guidance, we have closed the practice and have asked staff who were potentially exposed to self-quarantine and monitor for symptoms. Our facility is being thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, and we look forward to resuming normal operations at the appropriate time. In the meantime, we have consolidated our services to our Weymouth and Pembroke locations.

It is interesting times, no doubt. While I advocate caution (and precaution), I spend a great deal of my time trying to calm down panic from my co-workers. This is serious. It is not the Bubonic Plague. I, to some degree, understand the strategy of “flattening the curve”, but this feeds into fears, rumors, half-truths. The internet and the media are lapping it all up. At worst, this will be a severe flu season. I believe cures, vaccines and treatments will be forthcoming (but, what do I know?). I just don’t think that shutting down the world is a proportional response.

There has to be something else going on ,or perceived to be going on, that is not being told to the public.

Fears can be classified as rational or irrational.
For persons not in high risk categories fear of COVID 19 is irrational.
For EVERYONE fear of government overreach and the hour by hour shredding of the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Amendments is entirely RATIONAL.
This is already in place. Starting October 2020 you can't fly without a "RealID" compliant form of identification such as a passport.

The lower 48 states comprise over 3.11M miles. The epicenters of sick are in major cities (NYC, LA, Seattle, Chicago) where people are quite literally on top of each other.
Not all of us live in close proximity to others. My wife and I have acreage and rarely see our neighbors. We are continuing to live our lives, but that doesn't mean we're not being cautious. We're cooking at home, washing our hands thoroughly before we eat, and keeping in touch with family and friends through digital means out of an abundance of caution.
I recognize so much of FR consists of men and women over 50, but not all of us younger FReepers appreciate the doom and gloom. We're trying to maintain some level of normalcy in a world that is increasingly tilting at windmills.
