ALBANY Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered a statewide lockdown amid the worsening coronavirus pandemic Friday that will shut down most of the Empire State including New York City.
I want to be able to say to the people of New York I did everything we could do, Cuomo said. And if everything we do saves just one life, Ill be happy.
The restrictions take effect Sunday night at 8 p.m. and will:
Shut down all non-essential businesses across the state, leaving just grocery stores, pharmacies and other essential operations open Ban all non-solitary outside activity, like outdoor basketball games and other team sports Require all non-essential government and private sector employees work from home Laundromats and gas stations will be allowed to remain open, as will restaurants for take-out and delivery service. Cuomo said the MTA will continue to run the city subways and buses and the MetroNorth and Long Island railroads.
We have to do it, we have to be serious, Cuomo told reporters at the state capitol.
Everyone has personal freedom and everyone has personal liberty and Ill always protect that, he added. But everyone also has a responsibility to everyone else.

Cuomo is hearing the calls for him to take Biden’s place.
It's disappointing that elected leaders have not been able to figure out a more targeted shutdown that allows areas less affected. But that's due to the tension between medical and economic opinions.
But when you have people saying that everything needs to shutdown, well, those recommendations get heard.
There was a gentleman stating on another thread that said his federal pension and benefits are not sign too be touched if there is an economic downturn. If the economy 'augers in, everything will be on the table. Well, for the common people! LOL
Me also, keeping my business open with reduced workforce, defense, medical, among other things. Trying to keep my workforce calm, there have been a couple that have sort of come unglued. We press on.
Shutting everything down is insane. The 2008-9 recession caused by some bad mortgages was nothing compared to the economic effects of complete shutdowns across the world.
These politicians are betting that the virus will subside before the world economy crashes. In today’s world there is no way we can stop the economy even for a few weeks.
In wars people die. This virus kills people who are on the edge already. Statistically I’m one of them.
Those that can should stay home and I will. But those who need to work should be allowed to do so, and make it their choice.

I am certain nearly all the loudest “shut it down” voices in the peanut gallery on some sort of monthly check. SS, pension, etc. They are not one job loss from losing their home like a large percent of their fellow FReepers are and this certainly colors their opinion of the situation.
Wow!
It took 19 whole replies before the first geographically ignorant comment.
Free Republic is getting smarter!
All because of NYC.
So the whole rest of the state has to suffer.
That has cost more lives than he's worried about saving.
He's just virtue signaling while he's taking away our freedoms.
Cuomo: I got them in me power!
Well, McGruff is right.
And then pushed out to sea and the plug pulled.
Shoulda been done long ago.
“And if everything we do saves just one life, Ill be happy.”
