Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on Thursday endorsed Joe Biden for president, joining several other former White House hopefuls in uniting behind the frontrunner in the Democratic race.
Gillibrand, the junior senator to New York, ended her campaign for president in August.
She threw her support to the former vice president on the same day that Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard dropped out and endorsed him.
Gillibrand said in a statement: “It is clear that our country desperately needs a president with experience, honesty and integrity — that person is Vice President Joe Biden. Not only does Joe have the experience to lead our country, but he has the empathy and character to go with it.”
Biden leads Bernie Sanders by a wide margin in the race for delegates. His path to the Democratic nomination was all but assured after he swept Arizona, Illinois and Florida in last Tuesday’s primaries.
After Biden won decisive victories earlier this month on Super Tuesday, presidential candidates Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg ended their bids and endorsed him.
Elizabeth Warren is the only major former 2020 presidential candidate who hasn’t made an endorsement.
Biden in a debate Sunday against Sanders pledged to choose a woman running-mate if he earns the nomination.
