The Trump administration simulated the ability of the United States to handle a flulike pandemic months before the coronavirus turned the scenario into a reality.
The Health and Human Services Department led the exercise, known as the "Crimson Contagion," last year in conjunction with dozens of states and federal agencies, according to the New York Times. HHS also invited charitable groups, insurance companies, and major hospitals to take part in the effort.
Former Air Force physician Robert Kadlec, who has studied biodefense issues for decades, led the exercise, which imagined a contagious disease that originated in China and spread globally after nearly three dozen tourists were infected and returned home. The hypothetical outbreak spread quickly through the U.S. after an infected person attended a concert packed with thousands of others.
The exercise, which took place from January to August of last year, highlighted some of the problems that the federal government is struggling to handle now, such as insufficient hospital space and medical supplies, as well as confusion between federal agencies and between states and the federal government.
Trump has defended the federal governments response to the coronavirus pandemic, saying on Thursday that his administration has handled the crisis well considering nobody knew there would be a pandemic or epidemic of this proportion. Nobody has ever seen anything like this before.

Exactly. I've been through some corporate exercises and government as a consultant. Desks are setup, phone lines and computers setup, which leads to a realization there needs to be funding for a command center if there wasn't one, then scenarios are played from scripts (generally unknown to people in the exercise). Paper is pushes, data is entered and some problems are uncovered. But in general people are not fully engaged because they have normal jobs to do.
Look up Event 201
Johns Hopkins has been having these medical war game scenarios since before 911... the last one they did was on a possible corona virus outbreak but in the past they have done similar scenarios for smallpox (Dark Winter) influenza and SARS.
here is a list of them
http://www.centerforhealthsecurity.org/our-work/exercises/
The Dark Winter one was held shortly before 911 was about a smallpox outbreak caused by terrorists. So after 911,when many in the government worried that Saddam would set lose a smallpox attack, they already had plans intact on who to inoculate first and how to set up a clinic etc etc and these were sent to various public health clinics all over the USA.
(I was the doc in our public health clinic tasked to teach the plan, since I had expertise in doing this type of stuff when I was in Africa).
Apparently it was a flawed exercise.
Asian nations have beat the virus. We haven’t.
Yeah. If China had cooperated. The intentionally witheld data, samples, cooperation, paid the WHO TO LIE ....They lied their ass off, not to help, but to tru to make the rest of the world Italy. What do you do to a country that has a pandemic, hides it, lies about it, keeps flights open, witholds samples, researchers, and on paper looks like they were going for maximum spreading to the west.
I honestly dont know the appropriate response to China losing containment on a bioweapon research product and internationally trying to maximize the pain for others. Nukes, conventional military at the edges, banishment from the free world ....
My opinion is to release a worse one closer to their leaders. Nothing ?
He didnt end the directorate. Trump did merge groups that had repetitive functions As he should jave
IMHO this China virus is not the Bad Thing. If anything other than a diversion, it’s our large scale training to get ready for the Bad Thing.
Im hoping from this day forward new laws will be enacted that when something like this is remotely noticed the shut down of travel and business with this country is quick and fool proof
And PLENTY of movies with this topic; too!
You are correct, the man in charge of it has stated as such recently.
Even the advanced Mayans had calendar problems.
The 5,126-year-long cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, ended on 21 December 2012, but they left no record on how to solve it.
(Which mattereth not; as they wuz all gone by then anyway!)
Correct. Iran has already turned away from the geometric grown line and has almost flattened.
We’ve been hearing that such a ‘big one’ is coming for decades. The question is why weren’t the resources rerouted to prepare for this? Second question of course is why weren’t the production of masks and ventilators and the use of the available quick, mass tests kicked into gear well over a month ago?
We would practice mass casualty events annually.
Still pretty sure the first hour or so would be horrible. We never practice enough to make it perfect.
And...in most real situations, the lead people are knocked out in the first five minutes. Its just the way this stuff goes.
Exactly, no war goes perfectly. The time to reflect is afterwards, not run around and say we are all doomed and going to lose to the Nazi’s.
Can you imagine a school coming out afterward and saying. Well the active shooter event went exactly as planned, we knew we would have some casualities so there is nothing to be learned here, it went perfectly.
Thank you for your service. Good to see you on FR.
