What is this initiative?

We're an independent group of scientists and physicians working on an open-data clinical trial for prevention of COVID-19, through the use of hydroxychloroquine in combination with other therapeutic agents.

Unlike a typical commercial drug trial, our objective is to share trial data with the public* and health-care professionals as close to real-time as possible (with a reasonable level of data quality assurance).

Given the rapidly spreading coronavirus pandemic, we're looking for every possible means to fast-track the effort.

How can I participate in the trial?

Objective: Evaluate the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine in the prevention of COVID-19 infection.

Current Phase: We're first focusing on a cohort study of healthy medical professionals.

Status: Active / Recruiting

Join the study: If you're a front-line healthcare worker (physician, nurse, etc.), and willing to participate in the trial (or already taking hydroxychloroquine), please send us an email.

Future phase: Case-control study of hydroxychloroquine in the prevention of COVID-19. Stay tuned.

They have lived there all their lives. They get it so young they never get ill.

Interesting. The stuff I read was that chloroquine is still being actively and regularly used to treat for malaria in those regions. If the locals had built up an immunity to malaria, they wouldn't still be considered malaria hotspots. The cited map of areas affected by malaria would be blank.

Hard to find info beyond visitors, but this article does mention that some level of immunity is acquired. But it still claims that 90% of malaria deaths occur in those regions and that locals are indeed susceptible to the disease.

In all malaria-endemic countries in Africa, 25–40% (average 30%) of all outpatient clinic visits are for malaria (with most diagnosis made clinically). In these same countries, between 20% and 50% of all hospital admissions are a consequence of malaria (see country profiles for details). With high case-fatality rates due to late presentation, inadequate management, and unavailability or stock-outs of effective drugs, malaria is also a major contributor to deaths among hospital inpatients .

On reading this, I'm less convinced that locals are generally immune and untreated for malaria while only visitors are.

I am unaware of any country in the world where people who live there have to take an anti malarial. I spent years preparing soldiers for overseas movement and prescribing the drugs they would need. I am also unaware of any country on earth where the people who live there have to take ANY drug to live there. You may be correct. This may need to be revisited. You and Bill Gates. Not kidding.

I have absolutely no problem being wrong. But I do like to be convinced that I'm wrong. And I've never seen my name in the same sentence as Billy's...lol

I found another article from 2011. It is related to Saharan Africa. It attempts to tackle issues with chloroquine-resistant strains of malaria. From what I gather, it's an issue that comes and goes that they are spending time researching.

What caught my eye, however, was:

Chloroquine was the most common anti-malarial used according to surveys from 14 of 21 countries analysed, predominantly in West Africa. SP was most commonly reported in two of 21 countries. Among eight countries with longitudinal molecular resistance data, the four countries where the highest proportion of children treated for fever received chloroquine (Uganda, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, and Mali) also showed no significant declines in the prevalence of chloroquine-resistant infections.

Which I'm using to say that whether effective against malaria or not, chloroquine DOES appear to be in pretty wide use in these regions. I'm guessing maybe it would be rarer to use it as a prophylactic, they're probably not rolling out to villages every couple of weeks and administering. But it does appear to me to be in pretty high use in a therapeutic capacity.

I just don't want us to leave any stone unturned. And any time you can blow a hole through anything I put out, I'd rather we get the truth then worry about being right.

If you’re not a doctor, stop. malaria will give you headaches and ruin days if you start “reading about malaria”. There are “drug resistant” regions and all kinds of stuff. People have gotten PhDs on Malaria for centuries. One of the first things I tried to flush when I retired was what I knew about Malaria.

Agreed. And if you go over to the live thread of the president's press conference, I'm seeing that he is making these "anti-malaria" drugs available immediately. Although I didn't hear it first-hand.
