Italy reported 475 deaths from the coronavirus in one day, its civil-protection agency said on Wednesday.
That's the highest death toll reported in one day by any country since the coronavirus outbreak originated in Wuhan, China, late last year.
Even at the height of China's outbreak, its highest single-day death toll was 150, on February 23. Iran and Spain, both struggling with large outbreaks, have not recorded more than 200 deaths in a single day.
As of Wednesday, the coronavirus had infected more than 35,700 people and killed nearly 3,000 people in Italy.

Italy didn’t start locking down a month ago - it’’s just simply not true. You do realize many here have been watching this for several months. More like March 9th, a couple provinces late Feburary, why lie about this - it takes a second to verify? They haven’t been in lock down for a month. Stop making shit up.
we have reached the point where the daily growth of new cases and deaths is increasing so fast that even the most dense will “get it” in a day or two.
Both Italy and China went to full lockdown at approx 9000 cases. The USA will reach that tomorrow.
“We’re Americans. Let’s act like it and beat this thing.”
Nice post.
It looks like the Italians are heather than we are in normal conditions, or maybe their healthcare system is better than ours. Either way, it is not a good sign for USA.
The lockdown’s effectiveness won’t be known for 2-3 weeks from the time it started, given the incubation period and time the diseases can persist.
The lockdown is working in Poland and Romanian. Italy is just one country in Europe. They are ahead of the curve and the rest learnt from them and put in harsher methods earlier
these guys don’t understand exponential growth. But in a day or two they will.
And then they will be screaming that someone should have done something sooner.
“Big cities have lots of hospital beds and have a higher bed to citizen rate than small towns. Small town hospitals kick patients to big city hospitals every day.”
They won’t have that option if big city beds get full (and you can be certain they will if the infection goes worst-case). The ripple effect will affect big and small.
Biden actually used Italy’s single payer system to clap back at Sanders.
The same would happen even in a non single payer system. Not enough isolated hospital beds for patients

It spread before the lockdown. You got one to two weeks with no symptoms, during which you can spread the virus
He’s such a happy smiling Nazi.
Is Italy's health system consistently, totally overwhelmed like this every time flu season rolls around requiring a complete lockdown of the country to prevent more infections in an effort to keep it from totally collapsing, with them having to make decisions on simply not providing life saving treatment to patients because they can't?
So true. Idiots.
Their ‘lockdown’ wasn’t really a lockdown.
They didn’t close down restaurants/bars and non essential businesses until after the ‘official’ lockdown.
They have more patients than hospital beds and respirators.
Italy is a wealthy country with world class healthcare but they’re overwhelmed.
Is it in the environment somehow?
What other virus takes WEEKS to incubate enough to show symptoms? yikes.
Average age of dead 79.5
75% had high blood pressure
30% had diabetes
99% had some underlying health problems
But the biggest reason they died?
Government played god and stopped care to them.
