White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Wednesday that General Motors CEO Mary Barra offered the automakers shuttered factories to produce ventilators to address the coronavirus crisis.
Barra reportedly made several suggestions for how GM could assist the government, including using factory space for ventilator production, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg, adding that the government has yet to formally request the use of GM facilities.
The automaker is working to help find solutions for the nation during this difficult time and has offered to help, and we are already studying how we can potentially support production of medical equipment like ventilators, GM spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan told Reuters.
It remains unclear how long it would take for the manufacturer to develop ventilator manufacturing capabilities, but such a move has precedent both for the company and the coronavirus pandemic.
GM and other auto manufacturers revamped plants for tank production during World War II, while a number of companies have offered assistance during the pandemic in China, including Apple, Foxconn and joint venture automaker SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co., which said they had developed production lines for manufacturing medical clothing and masks, according to Reuters.

Good on GM!!!
And sell them to China where the air is so badly polluted they have higher rates of respiratory problems.
Nice!
In one emergency GM built airplanes and tanks. Now they can provide ventilators. That’s American know how and dedication for you. Kudos! We will win this war too.
I was recently in a Mel’s diner (the one in American Graffiti, but actually a real chain in California since the 1950s) with the Ped Nois, and they had a “Rock-Ola” jukebox. I told the Ped Nois and anyone else within earshot, that Rock-ola made M1s during WWII.
A ray of HOPE after the none stop 24/7 pandemic we’re all gonna die hysteria by the mediaVOMITS!!
It took months and even years for industry to tool to wartime production during the second world war - and we had a start of a couple of years before building stuff for the Brits.
Shut the media off as much as you can.
I am watching Tucker right now, so my cut off is not 100%, but I cannot be immersed in this stuff all day or I’ll lose my brain cell.
Respirators have been talked about in generality. Same as a ventilator I’m thinking? Not all are the same, some are very sophisticated, some not not so much. Some have mentioned that CPAP equipment could be used? Fact or fiction, are there legit publications that describe this?
I’ve said for a long time that we’ve given up the Arsenal of Democracy abilities.
Hopefully at the end of this, we’ll realize it and make permanent plans to keep critical manufacturing here.
What a great move by GM. Hopefully others will follow their lead, especially those where the changeover can be a little easier.
Brava!
Why would that be?
Yes, true dat, Covid-19 is new, fresh out of the factory.
Honda implemented a two-week shutdown and was more honest about the reason for it: a crash in demand for new cars.
If GM re-tools an auto plant to produce something other than cars, I think it would be an ideal excuse for them to shut down that auto production capacity permanently.
Yes, this is excellent news.
Gotta make ‘em fast though.
This is a World War without armies.
Did Mexican or Canadian plants shutter their doors? I was pretty sure all they did in the US was assemble components made elsewhere. Maybe not.
Hubby’s grandfather was a GM vice president that became the dean and ran the Buick plant program that switched to building engines for the B24. We are not connected to the site but found it years ago, many great pictures of the workers and what they accomplished. Pix too of hubbys grandfather teaching a class, handing out diplomas and sitting at a desk. It is great to see that spirit is still alivehttp://buickcity.blogspot.com/2011/08/army-airforce-training-school.html
They shouldn’t need an excuse. But maybe after this is under control people will be more interest ed in living away from cities and less interested in ride sharing and public transportation.
I don’t watch the chinese bought mediaVOMITS traitors anymore but my sister who has a handicapped child does and she’s literally beside herself. Her anxiety levels are through the roof over concerns for her child!! I have to constantly talk her down from the ledge...these asses have no idea the harm and cruelty they are inflicting on parents who depend so much on the medical, pharmaceutical and other types of provisions for their handicap children and disabled elderly parents!! I keep telling her to turnoff the damn fakenews!! Folks people are freakin out when their only source of news is the tv!! When this is over, and it will..this might sound not doable but screw it we should ALL be filing a lawsuit against the fake mediaVOMITS!
