Here in Georgia, the mass hysteria about the coronavirus has caused the governor to declare a public health state of emergency. He has advised public schools and daycare centers to close for two weeks in order to curb the opportunities for the virus to spread. Its unclear which is causing more panic in the hearts of Georgia citizens the coronavirus, the toilet paper shortage, or the fact that parents will have to be home with their children nonstop for two weeks straight. Many other states are also closing schools, so millions of our nations families are suddenly experiencing a little of what its like to homeschool.
My husband and I have been homeschooling since our first child was born. That child is now a senior in high school and will graduate in May. Thanks to Georgias dual enrollment program (which, unfortunately, has just been drastically slashed by the legislature), he will graduate with an associates degree in computer networking, along with completing his K-12 homeschool program. Our second child will follow suit next May, graduating with an associates degree also. Our younger two kids will start high school and middle school in the fall, so we trust that they will have similar success in their high school years.
One of the great benefits of living debt free - as we detail in our book, Debt-Free Living in a Debt-Filled World has been the opportunity to homeschool our children. My last day of full-time, outside-the-home employment was the day before our first baby was born. I worked part time from home off and on for several years after we started having kids, but Ive brought in almost no income for nearly a decade now.

Yep - the rest of America is about to experience our world for the last 16 years.
All right here: US 1 and US 2, Columbus through Trump, in the US history bundle with 22 video lessons; and the curriculum of World History since 1775 is finished, but I still have to film the World History lessons. But everything is downloadable right now.

Not really! Just found out a bit of info. Here in Fauquier County Va, there are lots of hills so some families get snow when others don’t. To be fair, if there is snow anywhere in the county, the whole school system shuts down, even though 95% of the students could have gotten to classes with no problems.
With school shut down now, some kids have access to internet and some don’t so, to be fair, the county has forbidden ALL teachers from issuing study help or requirements to ALL students.
School is truly out, kids.
My kids went to public schools. But I realized, that besides the forced ideology (which isnt bad in my area), and the vast inefficiency, bureaucracy and waste of money - public schools waste TIME.
My kids were there for every day, 7 hours a day. Take out time for assembly, announcements, useless mandated subjects (like reproductive health), teacher maintaining discipline in class, etc the entire learning time for a good student is probably 1 hour.
Hopefully, many will find this experience fulfilling enough to not return to the workforce. Enjoy this. Make Raising Your Kids Great Again, people.
Homeschooling ping
Wow! Great history resources, thanks!
We’ve met tons of missionaries’ kids who have been home-schooled on the mission field — mostly using the Abeka program — and all of them were/are scary smart, and socially precocious. Really.
I have a whole bunch of homeschool curriculum I’ am looking to unload.
Mostly jr/sr high levels.
The Saxon Math is going NOWHERE.
I have had several public school teachers tell me that, too.
The honest ones.
And home eating. Maybe even home cooking! Pizza is great but after a week...good incentive for some kitchen learning. And with spring on the way maybe kiddies will get more time playing in parks and outside than in front of a screen.
There’s a silver lining behind every cloud. Closing the public schools is at the top of my list. Check out the Khan Academy. It’s free and comprehensive. All you need is a loving parent(s) to monitor the child’s learning discipline.
There was a time, unfortunately, when the schools were only an adjunct to what the students learned at home.
LOL! I'm the same way - they can have my Saxon when I'm dead!!!
What is Saxon math; I have heard the term but don’t recall what it means.
If every kid learned at home, Columbine incidents would be history.
You can teach your children better and faster than the school system can, particularly if they are in the early elementary years.
