WASHINGTON - He called on the country to come together. He warned of pain to come. And he deferred to the nations public health experts while at least momentarily putting aside petty squabbling.
After weeks of trying to play down the risk posed by the coronavirus pandemic, President Donald Trump struck a new, more urgent tone on Monday as he delivered a sobering message to Americans grappling with a new reality that will dramatically alter their lives for months to come.
Trumps more somber tone came as he addressed the public at a White House briefing and made a direct appeal to all Americans to do their part to halt the pandemics spread.
Gone - at least for now - were Trumps do as I say, not as I do handshakes that had continued even after health experts admonished people to avoid contact and practice social distancing. Also gone was the rosy talk aimed, in part, at propping up reeling financial markets.
The shift was informed in part by a growing realization within the West Wing that the coronavirus crisis is an existential threat to Trumps presidency, endangering his reelection and his legacy. Trump has told advisers that he now believes the virus will be a significant general election issue and he took note of the clear-eyed, somber tone used by his likely general election foe, Joe Biden, in Sundays Democratic debate.
National crises are times of testing for presidents, and after days of shrinking from the urgency, Trump approached the moment with newfound gravity.
For all of that, though, Trump was still Trump. He said he would award himself a 10-out-of-10 rating. And on Twitter, he was still needling a longtime political foe, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has called for a more assertive federal response.

lol How am I supposed to do that?!?!
Here’s another hint; in the movie Braveheart William Wallace says “we’ll make poles as long as a man” (for defense against cavalry) and his friend responds “That long?” and Wallace says “Aye.” His friend says “Some men are longer than others.”
your mother been telling you stories about me again...
Great movie :)
One of the best movies. Watched it ten times if I’ve watched it once.
I’ve watched it easily 5 or 6.
Mel’s great.
too bad he screwed things up with that insane rant.
That comes from his pop.
Being worth a half a billion dollars...he was still able to put food on the table.
Three writers, three times the lies.
Agnes ‘72 ... I lived through it too -my father was stuck in Painted Post at the Lodge on the Green. It was flooded and they ended up on the roof. Someone who did not hear the door knock to get out on a lower floor was drowned.
We did not hear from him for days and he ended up walking home all the way to the Bath area where we lived.
Na, goats poop nice little pellets. The kids(not goat kids) can play marbles with them.
Long
:) Wrong.
You are right, I would proudly wear one - STUPID MEDIA
Time.
LOL Not even close.
I think Trump and other countries’ leaders have been shown evidence this is a bio-weapon that requires extreme measures to mitigate. Until that happened, they were all treating it as some new, unknown pathogen with the usual preventative protocols.
But he is forgetting about the Holy Week and Easter celebrations. I think there needs to be an exception for these.
Well, that makes me feel good..lol.
Okay...we all give....what. is. it?
:-)
media idiots, so full of hate
Can’t do that. Don’t want to give my name on the internet.
I think everyone else already got it though.
Haven’t you seen Braveheart? Those hints above weren’t enough?

That would certainly explain POTUS’ changed attitude (from “it’s just the flu”), on this....as well as the extreme measures being taken, by him/other countries/states, etc.
