Governments love crises because when the people are fearful they are more willing to give up freedoms for promises that the government will take care of them. After 9/11, for example, Americans accepted the near-total destruction of their civil liberties in the PATRIOT Act’s hollow promises of security.
It is ironic to see the same Democrats who tried to impeach President Trump last month for abuse of power demanding that the Administration grab more power and authority in the name of fighting a virus that thus far has killed less than 100 Americans.
Declaring a pandemic emergency on Friday, President Trump now claims the power to quarantine individuals suspected of being infected by the virus and, as Politico writes, “stop and seize any plane, train or automobile to stymie the spread of contagious disease.” He can even call out the military to cordon off a US city or state.
State and local authoritarians love panic as well. The mayor of Champaign, Illinois, signed an executive order declaring the power to ban the sale of guns and alcohol and cut off gas, water, or electricity to any citizen. The governor of Ohio just essentially closed his entire state.
The chief fearmonger of the Trump Administration is without a doubt Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. Fauci is all over the media, serving up outright falsehoods to stir up even more panic. He testified to Congress that the death rate for the coronavirus is ten times that of the seasonal flu, a claim without any scientific basis.

No, I don’t. As a PhD, I know how to discern fact from fiction, and I damned well know when numbers are thrown around without any source of reference or stipulation as to their veracity. What did you get your doctorate in, liberal arts??
I did my calculations based on the case counts from Johns Hopkins, which is generally regarded as a reputable source.
My Ph.D. is in biochemistry/molecular biology, and I have actual work experience in the government's pandemic response network. What is your Ph.D. in, and what experience do you have working in the field of modeling of disease spread?
I wouldn't be surprised if some of the people working behind the scenes during this crisis are former colleagues.
That’s why you don’t steer the boat from the front. Deaths is where you make decisions but you have to appreciate you are 2 weeks behind the asymptomatic and one week behind the seriously ill.

Once again, as I have already said multiple times, case fatality rates are not based on hypothetical asymptomatic cases. They are based on diagnosed cases. The reason I do not present my quick calculations as case fatality rates is because the pandemic is still in progress, and case fatality rates can only be calculated after all known cases have been resolved.
I know someone right now who wanted to get tested but could not, despite her strong belief that she could have it (son visited from Korea). But to balance that, known contacts of people who have gotten Covid-19 ARE being tested.
Do not stake your hopes on the notion that this is really circulating among everyone and we are only hearing about the most serious cases. That kind of belief, and the failure to take precautions stemming from it, is how this thing can get seriously out of hand. I hope you are familiar with basic infection control measures and are practicing them.

You really cannot say that since they had other conditions, they really died of those other conditions and not the coronavirus. It doesn’t work that way. What happens is that the other conditions weaken their immune systems such that they could not fight off the infection. Regardless, the virus is the proximate cause of death, not their comorbidities.
As an example, I have cancer. But if I should die in a car accident, it is the accident that kills me, not the cancer. The driver of the car that rammed mine can’t escape responsibility by citing the fact that I had cancer.
So are you going to go volunteer to work in a hospital for the next two weeks?

Have you ever studied the historical records on the 1917-1919 H1N1 pandemic? Or any of the many analyses that have taken place since? I have. The situation now is very much like the situation at the beginning of that pandemic. This is why I say that the numbers can very easily look like the 1917-1919 pandemic. This is why governments all over the world are taking this so seriously.
When Mr. GG2 and I were standing in line at Kroger on day one of the grocery store panic there was a guy in front of us that said he worked for the CDC. He said this is just a rehearsal for the big one that they think is coming in 2 years that is going to kill millions.
Yesterday I was talking to my sister and she mentioned that it kind of feels like a contrived dress rehearsal for something bigger.
Any rational person at this point has to be trying to figure out how we find ourselves in a worldwide hysteria with no toilet paper over a virus that has hardly killed anyone. I mean those are the hard facts. Its hardly killed anyone which means its either not that infectious or not that deadly or both.
So, what is the reason for all the panic. The media and govt officials are almost 100% to blame for all this panic. IMO Trump has been caught in the tide and finally decided he had to go with the surge and why let a good crisis go to waste. He’s managed to get the Fed to zero which would have taken him way longer without the panic.
You know, in a romantic sense, yes. I would welcome it. I’m in my mid 60s and own a half Million dollar home, all my vehicles and motorcycles are paid for. I’m retired. I watch Gold Rush and Moonshiners all day. If I lost everything and had to start over I’d like to think I would dive into the challenge. I’ve been a miner and a machinist. I can drive Rock Trucks, shuttle cars and run explosives. I can run any lathe or mill that was made before CNC. In fact I have my own mill and lathe right now. The challenge would be good for me.

If the segment with Scott Shellady on Varney this morning is on Varney’s website, check it out. He’s saying the same thing. The story is fishy.
RNC should buy billboards with an easy-to-read chart comparing swine flu and WuFlu. Compare numbers of infections, numbers of deaths, response time of respective POTUSes, etc.
People verbally discuss the differences, Rove might have it on a whiteboard, Hannity might have a graphic. But the people who need to know the information won’t see Rove, Hannity, etc. They can’t miss billboards when they’re sitting at a stoplight, or driving a long stretch of road.
I agree that Trump is boxed in by the tide of emotion that’s been whipped up right now. I expect that he will ride that tide out when it ebbs and turn it in his and our favor as has been his custom.
Very disturbing though what that CDC guy said to you. How do they know what’s coming in two years? Either he is full of himself and full of it or something very very wrong is being worked against us.
And the “us” would be the whole world not just Americans. What a terrible evil that would be.
