Drugs developed in the past to treat malaria, AIDS and other respiratory syndromes are showing promise against coronavirus.
Antivirals and other medicines created for past outbreaks like malaria, AIDS, and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) are being tested and showing early signs of success in treating the new coronavirus, experts say.
If the progress continues, medical experts in the United States could have a new regimen from drugs that are readily available and generally cheap to treat the most seriously infected patients and provide prophylactic protection for healthcare workers.
When the Chinese first reported the pneumonia cases to the World Health Organization on December 31, 2019, the new coronavirus full genome, which defines its pathogen, was forwarded to researchers on public databases.
What was discovered in early January 2020 was that the COVID-19 is in the same family as the coronaviruses that caused the outbreaks of both MERS and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) .
Since then, scientists and pharmaceutical researchers across the globe have been laser-focused on antiviral drugs already approved and used to fight MERS and SARS as well as HIV.
Karla Satchell, a microbiologist and immunologist at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, says finding new uses for old drugs is a good strategy.
The emerging studies, trials and medicinal applications are expected to prove these drugs to be effective although not the cure-all. Still, the UK government has banned the export of some of these drugs so that they have enough medicines for their own citizens if needed.
For instance, UK has banned AbbVies Kaletra/Aluvia, a combination of lopinavir and ritonavir, the generic drug chloroquine phosphate and the generic drug hydroxychloroquine.

Since far more people are dying from influenza. Wouldn’t it be more prudent to put forth efforts to control influenza A & B? The estimated deaths so far from influenza in the United States are approximately 40,000! Current deaths from COVID-19 is 6,687.
Silly me, we aren’t supposed to focus on the numbers of deaths and the number of recoveries, but instead, we are supposed to focus on the fear mongering and conjecture. Got it!
Optimism shmoptism! We need the rationers, the confiscators, the controllers, and the military to wage WAR on this non-plague. World War V is a week away.
Looks like this will be like the flu..
How many over 65 die from the flu??
I
As a new flu season arrives, older Americans are facing an increased risk of dying from the virus. An AARP Bulletin analysis of government data reveals that deaths attributed to the flu among those 65 and older have spiked in recent years. More than 12,000 people ages 65 and older died from the disease during the last flu season (starting Oct. 1, 2017).

Note: the numbers change quickly. These figures are current as of March 15, 2020. Visit CDC.gov for the latest government information.
63% of U.S. deaths were in Washington State
29 of total 67 U.S. deaths occurred at the same Washington State nursing home
Two more coronavirus deaths have been reported Sunday, associated with the same Washington State nursing home. A total of 67 U.S. coronavirus deaths were reported as of Sunday night, March 15.
42 of total deaths, or 63%, from Washington State
37 Washington State deaths are from King County (88% of Wash. State deaths)
29 deaths from Life Care Center, Kirkland (43% of total US deaths)
I’ve been taking Quinine for a week.....It’s cheap, readily available and has shown promise in lessening the chance for infection and severity of infection if it occurs.
Bring on the gin and tonic! The only problem with this option is that the prescription drug related to quinine is far more potent than any amount one would get from quinine. You would drink yourself to death before getting an optimal dose. Still... I don’t mind having a gin and tonic now and then. :-)
What I take is significantly stronger than the Quinine in Tonic water(~80 mg of quinine per liter)
Tonic water is excellent for instant relief of leg cramping though.
Well, I’m not sure what the side effects are for taking large doses of quinine, but be safe. We need to keep all our Freepers. :-)
Colloidal silver kills all viruses and bacteria
It’s a therapeutic dosage and has been used for decades.
Isn’t there the possibility of becoming a Smurf?
I am betting on Sunshine. It is effective against all seasonal flu and colds. Lacking sufficient sun exposure as in winter, vitamin D3 supplements substitute nicely. My whole family and i have not had any respiratory viruses since we started taking the supplements 14 years ago and we do not get flu shots. Ever. I may be wrong on this one but it is, at least, prophylactic that I can use right now and is better than hermetically sealing my house and hoping the gummint will save me with a WuHanFlu shot.
