NY governor calls on Trump to use Army Corps of Engineers to expand hospital capacity

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is calling on President Trump to activate the Army Corps of Engineers to increase hospital capacity in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The governor cautioned in a New York Times op-ed that the U.S. has not dealt with the pandemic on a national level like other countries, which are still struggling, and predicted the failure of the hospital system is “all but certain.”

“There is now only one question your team must answer for you: Can we slow the spread of the disease to a rate that our state health care systems can handle? The answer increasingly looks like no. But that does not mean we should not try,” he wrote.

Cuomo warned that states cannot build hospitals fast enough as the virus spreads, adding that the U.S. has fewer hospitals beds per 1,000 people than China, South Korea and Italy, and noting that some of them are reaching capacity.

“At this point, our best hope is to utilize the Army Corps of Engineers to leverage its expertise, equipment and people power to retrofit and equip existing facilities — like military bases or college dormitories — to serve as temporary medical centers,” he wrote. “Then we can designate existing hospital beds for the acutely ill.”

Gov. Cuomo gave an update.

If you listen between the lines it sounds like he's begging Trump to declare martial law (or something to that affect) so he, Cuomo, doesn't have to take blame for making tough decisions.

This asshole does not realize that he is the first line of defense and responsibility for the welfare of the residents of his state... not the federal government.

BS!
The GSA has used fast-track design-build with amazing success. Private sector can get this done, especially with modular hospital rooms.

They are too busy trying to fix the leaky southern border.

Cuomo could commandeer all of the summer mansions out on Long Island.

Cuomo should STFU. Any advice he has for the President he could give privately. Anything else is political grandstanding.

Seems like the governments have long set pretty tight controls on bed building.

My mom was a nurse for 50 years and just retired. I told her to expect to be pulled out of retirement. But she’s in her early 70s—not good to be around the virus for her.

I think we should recruit nurses from nursing schools. Good enough. A draft? Hard times.

I think I read other countries have been recruiting/enlisting retired medical professionals.

Didn’t China just shut down those 16 new Coronavirus hospitals they just built because they didn’t have any more patients?

How long are the Democrats going to keep trying to score political points over this?

Shameful, just shameful.

There is just no pleasing Democrats. I remember in the early 1960’s the Rats were calling for more hospitals to be built and provided funds to do so. Fast forward twenty years or so and the Rats said there were too many hospitals and laws were needed to reduce the building of new ones.
And now, we don’t have enough. And of course we need more government funding, regulations, and controls to build more.

"NY governor calls on Trump to use Army Corps of Engineers to expand hospital capacity"

Isn't that something Cuomo should have been doing since he's been in office? He's closed many psychiatric centers and some prisons (one an old State School for the mentally disabled down the road from me), so what has stopped him from turning those into civilian hospitals that could be stocked, and prepared in case of an emergency? No, they had to give illegals driver licenses, and free everything.

No, the bad old political ass hole governor is forcing the President to tell him NO!

Back in the day when the seeming need arose to have more beds available for Vietnam casualties, An off the shelf 300 bed hospital was ordered for installation at US Naval Base Subic Bay. That is, we had such hospitals on the shelf ready for delivery and set up.

That was 1966. I’m sure there better off the4 shelf facilities instantly available now but un needed. The Governor should be stood against the wall and shot for making such a request

The order was not filled because it became apparent it was not actually needed. Casualties could be flown to Hawaii or California.

Why don’t he call china? They have some little used surplus hospital that are parted out and ready to move. They probably even come pre-contaminated.

Excellent observation!

At the start of WWII we needed a large number of deck officers and marine engineers to man (gender neutral) thousands of merchant ships. Those mariners who were near retirement went back to sea; those mariners who were about to graduate from martime academies and other training facilities were fast tracked to the work force. The US Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point was established as was the Maine Maritime Academy and produced licensed mariners in 18 months or so.
