Every Briton over the age of 70 will be told "within the coming weeks" to stay at home for an extended period to shield them from coronavirus Health Secretary Matt Hancock says.
He told the BBC the rules will not come into force just yet but when it does it will last "a very long time".
The government has faced pressure to do more to tackle the epidemic after the UK death toll rose to 21 on Saturday.
All deaths so far have been of people over 60 or with underlying conditions.
Over-70s - and younger people with certain health conditions - will be told they must remain at home and have groceries and vital medication delivered.
The health secretary was asked by the BBC's Andrew Marr when the new requirement - reported to last as long as four months - would begin.
He said: "I'm not going to go into any more detail on the timings because we want to be ready to say that when we judge, based on the scientific advice, that the time has come."
"We know that when you ask people to do this sort of thing that they tire of it, it also has negative impacts," he added.
And speaking of broader measures designed to combat the virus, Mr Hancock warned: "Every single person in this country is going to be affected and they are going to have to do things."

This is utterly nuts. If they try it here I hope we all fight back with everything we’ve got. It’s Logan’s Run made real...and I suspect is an attempt to rid society of what is considered a difficult group.

So they want all of us 70+ folks to just dig into our bunkers and not come out? Some of those folks do not have someone to run to the market for them. They have to pay bills. Go to the doctor. Just get out of the cabin. Cabin fever will be the next sickness to kill us off. The nation belongs to the young and strong. All you old folks stay home and die. You litter the streets when you drop there on the corner of Sick and Over the Hill. That corner comes to us all. No one can escape it.
I am 72, am getting married March 11th. And and have no intention of being pushed anywhere.

Kind of ironic - we know that the Deep State and others use fear as a way to steer and control the people - we had the commie/nuke war threat until the Berlin Wall came down then it wasn’t viable anymore and up pops Globull Warming, which has many in fear that we’re gonna destroy the Earth even as we do less harm than past generations and none of the data actually supports anything but the earth’s climate and Mother Nature do not now, and never did have a “balance” and even if they did, we have no idea of how to maintain one or ‘fix’ things...all our efforts end up causing more harm....the coronavirus scare is no different - the panic-induced knee-jerking will cause more harm than the virus.
Folks who would be up in arms if the government decided to tell them they could not move freely are now begging that same government to lock them, and everyone else, down....I’d wager if, after doing that, the story ‘evolved” they would also go meekly to barb-wire surrounded camps/tent cities because the “latest info” said that’s the only way to stop it.
Even though we know that they use fear to guide and control us, so many can’t see it through the red haze of insane panic....they not only welcome the government controls, they beg for them...
And the fear mongers will try to leverage it...
Reminds me of a saying, by Ben Franklin, that many FReepers, who are now acting insane, used to showcase:
“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

After my bone marrow transplant, I had to do that for many, many months during my time as a complete bubble girl at home. You go thru stages It does get old. But, I was also unwell.
I have only been married once. (2nd coming in a month)
My first marriage lasted 47 years. She was born in NC, but grew up in Texas. It was a great marriage. She died of a heart attack in 2018.
My fiancee was born in Texas and has hardly been out of the state. She is an absolute jewel. God has blessed me again.
