I joked about this on Friday afternoon.

Everything I expected to do for the next month or so is shut down. The ACC tournament and the NCAA tournament have been canceled. The Players (golf) was canceled. The Masters is at least postponed. The ECAC Hockey tournament was canceled. The horse races in Kentucky I expected to attend in Kentucky in three weeks will be run run no spectators. My synagogue was closed. (First time someone in my family didn’t have the option to attend Shabbbat services since my family left Berlin in 1938.) The Metropolitan Opera is closed. While I was pissing and moaning about all this on Friday I wondered to folks whether they were going to close the Liquor Stores.

My club was open so I went there today. (I guess the Governor doesn’t know about this yet.) I watched horse races from around the country, all run without spectators. Not that I care about Aqueduct (racetrack in Queens, NY) anymore, it’s a complete dump now, mostly turned into an ersatz casino. But I noticed when they showed races from there, that there were LOTS of cars in the parking lot. I guess people can go to the casino but they must not be allowed to look at the horses.

INSANITY !

Yes. Americans. The same breed of people who told King George to stuff it. Won two world wars. Sent men to the men. Now cowering in fear from fever and chills, pissing their pants.

Not a pretty sight.

I was going to go up to NYC (where I’m from) this week but I heard rumors of closings, so I went to visit family in Charleston instead.

In Florida, where I live now, they have shut down all sorts of festivals, tournaments, gatherings of any kind...for, in my opinion, no good reason. Particularly since most of these were outdoor events where there is very little chance of getting anything except a hangover.

The Masters was closed to spectators, and we got an email from the city and county urging us to go and try to buy up the hamburgers and kegs the vendors had ordered but couldn’t use.

St Augustine cancelled three big festivals and they’re only going to reimburse the organizers for city fees. This is going to devastate local businesses and cultural organizations, and even some national ones. It’s totally insane.

Thanks for this terrific post. I share many of your same pastimes, I’d add MLB for myself. And yes ouch, at this stage of my life.

those indian casinos....yep, they don't give a rip....all that smoke and all those old people....but if there's a dollar to be made, the indians will do it...
