Millions of Britons will need to contract coronavirus in order to control the impact of the disease which is likely to return "year on year", the government's chief scientific adviser has told Sky News.
Around 60% of the UK population will need to become infected with coronavirus in order for society to have "herd immunity" from future outbreaks, Sir Patrick Vallance said.
Herd immunity is the resistance to a contagious disease within a population because enough people have become immune, and so it is harder for it to spread.
There is currently no vaccine available for coronavirus.
So far, 10 people in the UK who have had COVID-19 - the disease which develops from coronavirus - have died.

The goal is always....another vaccine....and mandatory inoculation.
Moo dammit! Just moo.
According to the experts it should be only a short time before millions have it, since it’s spreading like wildfire.
Problem #1) We are terrified that millions of people will get COVID-19.
Problem #2) We need to make sure that millions of people get COVID-19 because herd immunity is key.
Some have called it the “lie back and think of England” strategy. Except the other activity to which this phrase applies doesn’t (generally) involve the possibility of death as an outcome.
this sounds like what went on in Rockland County, NY with the outbreak of measles because they would not get their kids vaccinated...the idiots would literally have measles parties for their kids...
This is a real thing, but it’s a terrible idea at the onset of a pandemic of a new strain!
What you need to do is curtail the number of infections UNTIL you have a vaccine. After you immunize the population, let them get infected when their immune systems will recognize the strain and handle it much better. Subsequent spread of the same or slightly mutated strain will also have a much more subdued effect because of pervasive immunity (herd immunity?)
It’s a great idea when you have unsustainable socialized health care. Get rid of the high maintenance old people.
It’s a fact.
Viruses eventually peter out when enough people have been exposed and develop immunity to where they start running out of hosts.
Viruses also tend to weaken over time because killing off your host is not a good organism survival strategy. Eventually only the milder strains carry on.
Pull up last night’s Mark Levin Show. He had a doctor on who actually seems to know what the hell he is talking about.
“You go first.”
Corona viruses have been part of the world for eons. This one happens to be ‘novel’ so it has antigens the body has to learn to make antibodies for.
Each year theres a ‘new’ Type A H1N1 flu that you get a shot for, and you hope the scientists guessed correctly for this years strain.
Having the majority of the human population be able to stop the spread Because they have a level of immunity (from prior exposure) is logical from an epidemiology standpoint.
The article explains this poorly, but it’s the right idea, actually.
And these 10 were already dying of cancer?
I am of the opinion that herd immunity is a myth. Infections are very much a case by case basis.
We've got at least one person here on FR who thinks it would be wonderful if everyone in the USA got corona virus because 'that would lower the death rate'!Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
The false positive rate was 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
*facepalm*

You have FReepmail. He really said that, and could NOT be convinced otherwise!
See especially post #50 on that thread...
If the infected end up requiring long-term use of anti-viral drug cocktails the way AIDS patients do, pharmaceutical company margins are going to be the only healthy survivors of this pandemic.
This is the stupidest idea ever. You don’t build immunity to this virus. People that have recovered are getting it a second time.
