Millions of New Yorkers may soon need to separate scraps of fruit, vegetables and meat into separate garbage receptacles every time they cook and do dishes learning another new habit just as they did with plastics recycling in the 1980s and are now doing under a recent ban on plastic shopping bags.
The City Council speaker is calling for organic waste recycling, also known as composting, to be available and eventually mandatory for all New York City residents, in an effort to reduce exports to landfills and emissions of planet-warming gases.
The proposal, announced on Thursday by the speaker, Corey Johnson, comes on the heels of sharp criticism of the citys recycling program. New York recycles less than 20 percent of the 3.1 million tons of garbage that its residents produce each year, a number well below other major cities.
More than a third of residential waste consists of food waste and yard refuse, organic materials that could be separated out, composted and turned into fertilizers or biogas, city officials say.
But seven years after the city introduced curbside pickup of organic waste, less than half the population has the option to request the voluntary programs brown recycling bins. In the neighborhoods where bins are available, just 10 percent of residents use them.
If the plan is approved in the coming months, its implementation would roll out over several years, much as plastics and glass recycling did in the 1980s. The city would first make bins available everywhere and educate the public about what goes in them, and later make their use mandatory.
Skeptics say mandatory composting could be prohibitively expensive. In 2016, the nonpartisan Citizens Budget Commission concluded that separate collection of organics would cost New York between $177 million and $251 million annually.

It’s abad policy but a good voluntary practice. Composting is great. Nature’s magic.
Yeah. That won’t draw any bugs.....
Be careful out there. If someone adds a politician to the recycled waste it will ruin the whole batch.
It’s great if you like snakes and bacteria.
Here’s what I don’t understand about composting. It’s great if you have a garden and want to build your soil, but why would a city want to keep compost out of their landfill?
Ping
I hope they all love the stench of rotting grass.
And even rats. But we're already overrun with them.
Landfills bury everything and it’s gone.
Composting allows the product to be reused.
Our city does trash and yard waste pickup once a week on different days.
Yard waste goes to their composting site and you can pick up the finished product for free.
Problem I have is they are very anal about it only being yard waste. They get upset if they spot dog waste in your roll out bucket. So with the amount of pine waste in the product it needs to be zipped up when you get it home.

You’re full of all kinds of good news this morning aren’t you? :-) good to see you though :-)
New York has lost its mind
NYC wouldn’t have a rat problem if they had normal kids with BB-guns.
I was sure the headline meant New York State.
Holy carp! Who would want bio waste floating around in the city? You know they’re going to organize a strike in July, right?
Hey New York, build a few shrines for people to lick. It’s just about that level of stupidity.
Do I see a move to Texas in your future?
Anything over 65 degrees is melting to me :-)
Already mandatory in this state. They are having problems with the rollout though so everyone is ignoring it. Once the commies get their s#!t together though my prediction is disaster. We already have a huge problem with black bears breaking into homes. Now they are mandating scent attractant piles in everyones yard.
I have a large garden, i do compost, but we are careful not to put certain things in the pile. I already have a bear problem here. They are in my yard daily. They’ve broken into my mudroom. That’s just one aspect.
Unless done properly it becomes a heath hazard. Expect to see more roadside waste from these edicts, and not the friendly kind either like bottles, cans, paper, and plastic. Real disease causing stuff. These people live in a fantasy land.
