The Extraordinary Decisions Facing Italian Doctors
The Atlantic ^ | 3/11/20 | Yascha Mounk

Posted on 03/12/2020 9:22:31 AM PDT by semimojo

One week ago, Italy had 2,502 cases of the virus, which causes the disease known as COVID-19. At that point, doctors in the country’s hospitals could still perform the most lifesaving functions by artificially ventilating patients who experienced acute breathing difficulties.

Today, Italy has 10,149 cases of the coronavirus. There are now simply too many patients for each one of them to receive adequate care. Doctors and nurses are unable to tend to everybody. They lack machines to ventilate all those gasping for air...

The authors, who are medical doctors, then deduce a set of concrete recommendations for how to manage these impossible choices, including this: “It may become necessary to establish an age limit for access to intensive care.”

Those who are too old to have a high likelihood of recovery, or who have too low a number of “life-years” left even if they should survive, will be left to die. This sounds cruel, but the alternative, the document argues, is no better. “In case of a total saturation of resources, maintaining the criterion of ‘first come, first served’ would amount to a decision to exclude late-arriving patients from access to intensive care.”

Had to excerpt but I recommend reading the article.

SIAARTI is a respected professional organization and Italy has first world hospitals.

This is wartime triage.

Yep, this is what happens when it gets away from you. Kudlow said the virus is contained in the US.

yeah and he has no basis to say that. the only way to contain it is if we shut down large gatherings and people practice social distancing. if we can do that, we smooth the curve and it’s not scary. if we don’t, we look like italy. we are at a key inflection point right now.

The death rate in Italy is because respirators are cost centers for socialized hospitals, not profit centers as in America.
On most medical equipment such as MRI machines etc, we have at least 5 times as many as European nations do.

That’s because here you can earn money with it. In socialized medicine it is a service to be rationed out.

The coronavirus doesn’t kill, socialism does.

The downplayers may prove to be more dangerous than anyone else. Just like that dumb basketball player who thought he was so clever.

Mussolini was executed in a very public manner. We’ll see if Italians still have that passion these days.

I think I read/heard we could have a shortage of ventilators if things got real bad. Of course they are probably made in China along with drugs.
