CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta argued on Wednesday night that President Trump's Oval Office address to the nation "smacked of xenophobia" after the president referred to coronavirus as a "foreign virus."
"I think we should point out, at one point during this address the president referred to the coronavirus as a quote 'foreign virus,' Acosta said on "Chris Cuomo Primetime" following the president's primetime address.
"Now, why the president would go as far as to describe it as a foreign virus? That is something well also be asking questions about," Acosta said.
He suggested that White House adviser Stephen Miller might have had a hand in the language.
"But it should be pointed out that Stephen Miller, who is an immigration hard-liner, who advises the president, is one of his top domestic policy advisers and speechwriters, was a driving force in writing this speech," Acosta continued. "And I think it is going to come across to a lot of Americans as smacking of xenophobia to use that kind of term in this speech."
Trump announced a 30-day travel ban from most of Europe during the address, though the United Kingdom and Ireland are excluded from the restrictions.

Maybe Trump should shut down the White House press room.
Out of an abundance of caution mind you.
He should also point out that India closed their borders to all foreigners yesterday, and it wasn’t a bunch of white cracker types from Kentucky or Idaho who made that call.
Your strident message declaring the President to be stupid is a stain on Free Republic.
Your insolence and declared intellectual superiority to the President and hs task force of the world’s greatest disease experts is just pathetic
There will be several positive fallouts from CV. One will be the death of PC.
Oh the hughmanity.
Well, foreign or not, it’s our virus now.
No one had ever seen it before.
Perhaps we should refer to it as an “Alien Virus.”
That will “set them off!”
Wuhan Flu is what it is.
You, on the other hand were never aware of the narrative nor even the competing narratives about this escaped Chinese bioweapon.
Isnt Lyme Disease named after Lyme, PA from whence it came?
I guess thats racist.
Certainly because it is the truth.
Probably because China suffered from the release of bio-hazards from their research facilities weapons labs on at least 12 previous occasions?
Probably because COVID-19 is the product of a research project to fuse a coronavirus (for easier spread and transmission) with a viral pneumonia (to increase lethality) that was inadvertently released by a "Clumsy Insider" before it was ready for prime time.
COVID-19 is NOT a bio-weapon (yet), because the Chinese have not (yet) developed a vaccine for it.
“This thing is, wrongly or rightly, *perceived* as Life and Death by many, including a fair portion of his would-be voters.”
Sadly, this is true to some extent, if you agree with the “perception is reality” saying.
Helping to further the panic narrative are some of the left-wing people on Pence’s team (snakes) who have a political interest in fomenting chaos.
Lyme, Connecticut.
Spanish flu, german measles, montezuma’s revenge, chinese colera, asian black plague, ebola from africa, dengue fever, and, as general washington wrote, the french disease!
Xenophobia is one of those concocted words to smear what globalists don’t want anyone thinking.
Wasn’t Ebola named after a river in Africa — a FOREIGN river? Did Obama ever say the word, “Ebola”, back in 2014? If so, he must apologize, immediately.
That man is a traitor.
