Thats great. The European travel ban...not so much.
Great idea!
“Buy American White House Confirms Executive Order That Will End Medical Supply Chain Reliance On China”
Would be interesting to see exactly how it ends up working. Lots of US companies went to Vietnam to get away from China with the recent trade war...but then Vietnam used China for raw materials (fabrics, in this case). So how deep-down in the production supply lines will this EO go?
Anyway, still a BIG STEP in the right direction.
Bayer used to have operations in Elkhart, IN. They shuttered those beautiful buildings and left. Would like to see those buildings and operations back in business!
Lowering the tariffs in the 60’s did more harm than the taxes and regulations.
You can remove all taxes and regulations and still not compete with cheap labor in China.
And not all of the taxes and regulations are bad. But you can’t have those taxes and regulations if you don’t protect your economy.
Mpore than one retailer told me Chinese here were buying masks sending them to China. Good friends and neighbors huh?
Well, I was not aware that we had lowered tariffs on Chinese stuff in the ‘60s.
Tariffs can be manipulated to mitigate cheap labor, to a degree, and we should have protected our industrial base.
So, our government is totally at fault for perpetrating this enormous FRaud, scam, call it what you will!
And the poor suffering US taxpayer will, once again, have to pay the price of their perfidy!
I didn’t have much of a voice back in the day, but I did know that our trade/tax/regulation policies were not good for America!
I am a long-time advocate for fair trade, level playing field, etc. etc.
I am also a long time advocate for the FAIRtax, which would be of enormous benefit to the USA, were we able to get it in place.
So...China is the largest supplier of bio weapons in the world. Go figure...

"Government's reliance"(?) What about the nation's reliance?
that's marginal, Clinton getting rid of tariffs, pushing China into the WTO, and giving the most favored nation status lit the greed fuses in corporations and made the collapse of US industry inevitable. Saving $20 dollars an hour by hiring six Chinese in China rather than one American in the US is what CAUSED this outsourcing,
China didn't take a single job from the US, the siren song of historically unrealistic profit margins took those jobs to China.
Amen
I don’t want to sound like an optimist. I’m just an old newspaperman who has learned to go where the facts lead him.
But if this coronavirus hysteria puts a dent in US reliance on the Chicoms for manufactured goods ... well, you can start singing “Look for the Silver Lining.”
Perhaps this will be the death knell for Globalism and people will wake up as to why Borders, Language and Culture matter.
I said the same thing to a co-worker last night.
Thanks for replying to my post.
For many years, I’ve thought that the Chicoms need our business more than we need their shoddy goods.
I’ve also failed to see China as some economic juggernaut that will dominate the world.
It’s still a poor country by our standards — and likely to get poorer as we bring manufacturing home.
Of course, a lot depends on reelecting DJT and a Congress he can work with.

Great to hear
this is called civil defense
Now allow hospitals to expand to have the extra 15 to 20 percent overcapacity they had before the health care finance commissions focused on per bed financial production.
the over capacity was a civil defense plan
as was the highway system that could be landing strips for aircraft.
No one could credibly argue that it's a good thing to allow our mortal enemies control our pharmaceutical market, and only our internal mortal enemies would have let it happen.
It was "free money". It was lying on the ground. President Trump picked it up and said "It's mine now!". :D
Di Fi is saddened
Get big pharma to keep our medications American! How did we ever get to the point where our enemy is holding our life line in an emergency, politician and corporations working together against the American people for profit
