House set to vote to reauthorize surveillance law after striking deal on reforms

Washington — The House is set to vote to reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) on Wednesday after reaching a bipartisan deal that includes several reforms just days before the measure is set to expire.

...The White House has not said whether the president would sign the bill as currently written, but a senior Justice Department official told CBS News on Tuesday that the administration is "pleased with the direction that we're headed."

...

The deal reached by House leaders would require officers overseeing FISA applications to certify that the Justice Department has been fully informed of any issues with the accuracy of the application, and require that agencies submitting applications appoint officers to ensure the applications are compliant with the law.

The bill also includes measures to assuage concerns by Democrats and libertarians worried about government overreach in surveilling of American citizens, such as ending the National Security Agency's to collect call detail records. It also includes measures to increase transparency, requiring the Justice Department to publish reports explaining its positions on how information is derived for FISA applications.

Whenever there’s a “deal” you can bet the ranch that the Republicans got short changed. They always do.

The question to test this “deal” is, “Could the corrupt FBI have beaten these controls when they were going after Trump?”

I think so, pretty easily. Looks like a phony deal to me.

President Trump should veto.

True but it will be merely symbolic. The GOP weill abandon him in spite of the fact that FISA was the main tool used in an effort to remove a duly elected Republican president.

Barr can now claim that his “work” is complete and its time to move on.

The legislature is full of compromised representatives who will gladly over-ride any veto by Trump in order to keep the deep state in full enjoyment of its customary, unimpeded, and expected, lifestyle.

Adding a fiddle section to the orchestra that plays our death march is not reform.

You are clearly mistaking the old America with the new one with its tiered system of justice and protections for the political elites.

Still waiting.
The Deep State is like a snake, slithery, slippery and hard to kill. But the honey beaver chops em up and spits em out. They will eventually be taken down or at least considerably weakened.

I know, I’m so old school I think we should still uphold the Constitution as written.
Including the natural born citizen requirement, which the main purpose of was to exclude the children of foreign nationals as they are born as foreign nationals just like their parents.

>>Trump is going go veto this thing

Probably. But I wonder if there’s a third option.. sign it AFTER the previous one expires, and then re-constitute the court from scratch with ALL Trump judges who have agreed never to target Republicans. That might be fun to watch the commie scream.
