What LesbianThespianthingamadingdong doesn’t comprehend in wisdom yet is that the scientific method when applied to medical ‘studies’ is often a scam used in a publish or perish environment. Research grants require deliverables usually in the form of publication.
I know this. I was part of the culture of scientists, as a consultant to medical scientists who relied on my help to design their ‘studies’ and help guide their analysis. I was also an editor and reviewer of manuscripts submitted to scientific journals.
‘Science’ in the medical research world is an ‘ideal’, seldom achieved. But the publications have to be fed something and as long as it looks scientific, it usually gets a look at. Or a big name will do it or his/her protégé.
Kind of like taking a drunken bum off the street and dressing him up in priestly vestments and calling him a holy man. Maybe not quite but you get the picture.
Often treatments and remedies go back centuries, they are known to work, like Vitamin D and rickets or Vitamin C and scurvy. Bringing it forward into the age of wokeness subjected many old ‘wive’s tales’ to scientific ‘rigor’ (rigor uh-huh bullsh*t) in order to ‘validate’ them.
You get the picture.
Try not to be so trusting of a white coat in a lab. They’re human just like you and I. Some are good, outstanding even, but the bulk are trying to meet that publication deadline and are looking for a rescue on a dismal study showing no results, seriously.

I was a young post doctoral researcher in the late 1990s that saw firsthand the corruption and scientific misconduct at FDA, WHO and the rest of the worldwide deep state swamp and was told that if I objected to the ‘policies’ I would not be on any related research grants. I told those threatening me to go eff themselves.

Flu's are caused by the influenza virus. This is a corona virus. It is NOT a flu. If anything it's more akin to a viral pneumonia. Influenza virus's target the upper respiratory system. This virus targets the lower respiratory system.
Your own link says that on average 8% of the population will get the flu.
If JUST that many get this virus that would mean almost 30 million in the US will get the corona virus.
Your own link also says that the death rate is somewhere between 1.4% and 2.3%. That's around half a million dead.
But that's not the real worry. The real worry is that this spread FASTER and MORE than influenza. Your own link says that for each person that gets the flu they spread it to 1.3 other people. With the corona virus each person who gets it spreads it to 2 or 3 people on average.
And the REAL worry, why so many governments are trying to stop it, is hospitalizations. Every example we have says that 5% who get it end up in critical condition...if they are not in ICU's they die. If 30 million people get infected that's 1.5 million who would need icu treatment to stay alive. There are ONLY 1 million total hospital beds in the US and on average only 40% of those are available. There are FAR FAR fewer ICU beds available.
See the problem? After just a little while the medical care system get's overwhelmed. That's exactly what's happening in Italy and Iran right now.

This is wrong despite being in the piece I linked to. For the last time it is NOT POSSIBLE to even GUESS the death rate until the thing has mostly burned itself out. You cannot know the death rate without knowing the infection rate. There can be 10 or 100 or 1000 times as many people infected who either show light symptoms or non at all.

Most people will be exposed to virus, about 30% won’t even know they have it, 1% or less will die from it...mostly elderly and those with deficient immune systems.
People can get virus more than once.
Our elderly and those with compromised immune systems need to be quarantined and protected from virus exposure. Healthy people will survive infection. Can it mutate into a more deadly virus? All viruses can.
The economic effects will be hard.
Personally I am watching for really cheap cruise deals and I am an old guy.

I’m concerned about the unhelpful panic being fed by the media and some people here on Free Republic. I guess you are one of those people who don’t understand why you should not shout “fire” in a crowded theater.
You cannot know the total number of people infected, who never show symptoms.
That number is impossible to know,
The mortality rate is calculated this way ALWAYS.
(Number of people dead/ number infected with symptoms)
You can test a whole bunch of asymptomatic people, and find some that are infected too, but that would give you a lower number that is deceptive, since you can never know how many OTHERS are infected with no symptoms, unless you test 100% of the population.
As someone who has always allowed the media to get me “all jacked up” about the crisis du jour, I’ve tried my best to stay calm, knowing the media politicizes EVERYTHING and desperately wants to use this to get rid of Trump since the impeachment failed.
But by all accounts, one thing that is undeniable is that this virus is deadly to the elderly and those who have compromised immune systems.
I have a number of elderly relatives including parents and in-laws. I am quite concerned about them.

OR our government is lying and in the name of “Everyone keep calm,” (which I understand), is sending a very suspicious message. It is hard to keep calm when schools are closing, travel is discouraged, large sections of towns are being quarantined, the NG is called in, etc.
Also, IF it is truly an awful pandemic, in its attempt to prevent panic and economic collapse, people are being lulled into a sense of “no worries.” I know an elderly couple who is about to head out on a 7 day cruise! My parents, both in their 80’s, go, go, go EVERY freaking day! They go to various retirement age functions on a weekly basis. They go out to eat several times a week. My mom REFUSES to let this keep her home at all.
My in-laws are about to go to a CASINO for the weekend! My FIL just had a kidney removed a month ago and has various health issues. They get sick every single time they travel!
It is easier to find a needle in a haystack than it is to find out the age of the people who have died from the COVID-19. Oh, they make it a point to publish it if the person is 65 or under. So far, I’ve only seen 2.
