Middle class Americans are opting not to marry because until they're financially ready, according to new research that shows people value having a lot of money and a career they enjoy more than a legal union.

Student loans and other debts get in the way of marriage which is nowadays regarded as a 'capstone achievement' that comes once an individual has set up for a stable future, researchers say.

While 60 percent of Americans said they had been married in 2002 that dropped to 50 percent in 2017.

In that same 15-year period the cohabiting figures rose from 54 percent to 59 percent, according to Pew Research.

Of those who can’t afford it, how many are convinced that a wedding needs to be a $20,000+ production in order to be valid?

That is actually a cheap wedding.

I think I spent between three and four thousand on ours.

There’s been research that the durability of the marriage is inversely proportional to the cost of the wedding.

Makes sense. A woman who just HAS to have a lavish wedding is unlikely to be satisfied with any more mortal as husband.

Horse crap. It’s the “free milk”.

Horse crap! It's the fact that women divorce for any reason whatsoever due to "no fault divorce" and take 50% of the man's stuff with them when they refused to work a day in the last 15 years.

Forget it! I tell both my sons to never EVER get married. Period. They saw what their mother did to me, that's all they needed to see.

You just described my ex and I believe me when I tell you I'm glad the bish is gone. I can rebuild my life and my wealth, I'm so much happier without her.

No-fault divorce has destroyed the institution of marriage in this country.

High cost degrees with no chances of significant employment. Shouldn’t the universities have some responsibility?

Make it cost effective—Tax breaks for married couples—More welfare for Moms to marry fathers of children—ten at least there will be a dad at home to help raise the kids. Lower crime costs if nothing else. Also, if they make polygamy legal that too might make marriage (many) acceptable—Real reason, we have fallen away from our Christian values —Wait for the Coming Great Revival! Lots of church meetings and weddings are coming along with another great war; WW III. This conflict With have USA and her allies vs. China and her allies. My bet—Russia stays neutral to pick up whats left when the guns are silent.

That’s pretty much what mine cost. Wedding dress off the rack, cooked a turkey and a ham with the fixings for dinner, JP married us at my parent;s house and only invited people that we actually wanted there. As my wife put it, “I don’t want a wedding, I want to be married.” Hard to argue with that logic.

What a pack of lies. Marriage allows expenses to be shared and usually results in lower tax rates.

Yes. And more gets shared. Like reason and judgement. When we married, we both had nothing and built our future together. That meant thinking through finances and not wasting resources. Too many young people are careless and don't reasonably consider actions. Marriage made my wife and I smart about how we built a life together. And having children brought us good fortune, because we worked even harder for their sake. Almost fifty years together now, and its been great.

“Sounds like he made a mistake”

You are right; as he was not coming across as like he found the love of his life. I knew his first wife; she was the love of his life, and he hers.

The biggest problem is that many women have confused the wedding with the marriage. A wedding is one day (well maybe a week, depending on some of these weddings) and a marriage should be a lifetime. Amazing how you can’t afford to get married but you can afford to have those children out of wedlock.

My children paid for their weddings. They probably spent under $2000 each and had very nice ceremonies. The one at the church cost way more than the one at the country club. Color me surprised because both my daughter and her husband were contributing members, in both time and money. We did pay for both our daughter and daughter-in-law’s wedding dresses. Neither one was over $500, including all the alterations and fancy undergarments. Daughter probably had 150 people at her wedding and most were close family. Son had less than 50 and it was probably one of the nicest I have attended.

Yeah...

That’s why there are so few Chinese, Vietnamese, Koreans, or other Asian people around and the ones that are around are complete pu——es...

(I really hope that I did not need the sarcasm tag for that.)

I was fortunate to stay away from questionable women for several decades until I found the one I married. She feels similarly about me, thankfully.

It is so true that both have to be mature and wise, to assure a solid future. Two people without wisdom, but with the right hearts and minds, will also succeed.

A couple with one person unwilling to make it work is too often doomed.
