In an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus, Ohio State is suspending all in-person classes through at least March 30, instead moving to virtual instruction, according to a university-wide email from Ohio State President Michael Drake.
Ohio State also announced a hiatus on the scheduling of "new, non-essential events" through April 20, and is encouraging event organizers for scheduled non-essential events between now and then "to immediately evaluate whether these events should continue in person." The Buckeyes' spring game is currently slated for April 11.
Students, currently on spring break, will be permitted to work from their current place of residence or return to campus "where appropriate social distancing and enhanced preventative public health and hygiene measures will be actively encouraged."
The news follows the first cases of the coronavirus in the state of Ohio, where three people tested positive for the virus in Cuyahoga County.
"While there are no campus-associated cases of COVID-19, we know that there are at least three confirmed cases in the state of Ohio, and we expect that there will be more," Ohio State President Michael Drake said in the email. "We are being proactive in an effort to prevent illness and continue the important work of the university. I understand that our policy guidelines will cause measurable disruption, but the risk of not acting outweighs the inconvenience of these temporary measures."
Ohio State plans to evaluate other classroom experiences such as laboratory and performance classes. The university plans to have more specific guidance on that front later this week.
...oh, I’m not denying the impressive effort the hypsters are putting forth.
We are setting up to work from home. No words on classes here but there is only one case in Virginia....where my daughter lives
ridiculous
“We had those large losses from that one nursing home, and that has skewed the mortality rate...”
Just happened to catch the DC mayor’s press conference yesterday. She and health officials discussed 2 confirmed cases there. When asked, they refused to give details of each case (age of patients, how they may have contracted COVID, etc.). If the deaths tend to be in the elderly population, or people with serious pre-existing health conditions, this would be relevant information to get out to the public. Instead, public health officials speak in generalities, give no real data except numbers, but then “recommend” to people what they “must” do to protect themselves. There is a disconnect here, and it seems to be feeding the major media high technology societal panic.
I also notice that reporting on the possible origins and about China have disappeared from general US news. Also, knocked bigmouth Schumer’s threats against the judiciary off the front page. Watch out on COVID because like 911 (e.g. FISA) and the 2008 financial crisis (e.g. Dodd Frank), the federal government (Congress) could make an attempt to expand their power to enact national public safety laws and take away some more of our freedom. If anything, they should put tighter control on non-citizens and immigration... which they will not.
Science, Art and Music students will have to be on campus
Not sure what you are referring to.
Vietnam has an excellent scholastic program.
Rapidly moving up.
That’s why Tucker Carlson makes sure to call it Chinese coronavirus. China did it.
I am referring to shutting the school system down.
Many years ago, I took a doctoral-level research methods in education class at OSU, hoping to get into their program. I was the youngest in the class by about ten years. Most of the other students complained about how hard the statistics part of the course was. I got through it fine with my two semesters of community college stats courses that I took as a freshman.
I got an A. The university lost my application to the program. They found it a year later and offered me a spot in the program without an assistantship. I said no, having just finished a year at another program at another university, completely paid for by an assistantship.
There were A LOT of Chinese students walking around the campus at OSU back then. I’m sure the number has quadrupled since.
Thank you for something there is a scarcity of in these discussions everywhere, not just here on FR. That is a discussion of actual symptoms and how individuals handle the illness. Cant have much of that talk or the panic might be abated.
Why is it ridiculous?
Up until one week ago, Vietnam had managed to be completely free of the virus, despite initially having 16 cases, and being very close to China.
All of that changed about one week ago, apparently there was a plane from England (I think?) with a number of people on board who apparently had the virus and the number pretty much went back to where it had been before. But now, it seems to have impacted the big population centers...
But I have been very impressed with the way they have been focused on the kids. Even right now (literally this moment) I am seeing on the news, how they are showing a school classroom, empty, but then showing students online, connected to their teacher.
Reminds me of shows I have seen, from Europe, with teams playing sports, without fans there.
I think lots of places will be adopting this. Soon.
OHIO PING!
Please let me know if you want on or off the Ohio Ping list.
OHIO STATE SUSPENDS IN-PERSON CLASSES THROUGH AT LEAST MARCH 30 DUE TO CORONAVIRUS

The irony is that students will probably learn as much, or more, by studying than by going to a bricks and mortar classroom.
Thank you for your graceful reply to my terse comment. (I was tired and pecking out on my phone. I felt less terse than it sounded.)
I understand where you are coming from. I get frustrated with your approach, but I understand it’s more of a personality difference than me being right and your approach being wrong. So I was wrong in jumping you. I apologize.
It’s maddening
The poster is being praised for his thorough presentation and spreadsheets trying to bolster the argument that this is a serious threat....and yet looking at the numbers in a realistic context, he’s arguing against his own assertion.
If he really cared about the health and welfare of the general public, then show me the spreadsheets and research on a much greater and present health danger....the flu. Where is that info?
I submit most of the snowflake, fear mongering Freepers fit into one of these categories:
-they live at home in mom and dad’s basement watching youtube videos all day
-they work for the govt.
-they work for some huge corporation that is ready to give them paid time off and let them work at home.
-rich, retired, and already ‘got theirs’
I can assure you they do not own a small business, as I do, being bombarded everyday by the virus of panic, overblown stories and stats that have absolutely no context to reality. These are the folks that are more dangerous than the virus itself.
Why?
Because we've had zero deaths in this country of people who are less than 70 years-old from COVID-19.
Kids don’t get it.
Determining actual risk is extremely important.
We had those large losses from that one nursing home, and that has skewed the mortality rate to something in the range of 70%. Over the long hawl that isn't going to hold up, so it's nothing more than a curiosity at the moment. No nation is seeing anything like that.
It's just unfortunate how that turned out there for the inhabitants.
Even the Diamond Princess, the cruise ship where everyone was figured to be next to death, out of 696 cases, so far only 6 have died. That and other numbers out there outside of China, make it clear this is not a mass killer. People will die like they do whenever the flu comes along. Sad but true.
...make it clear this is not a mass killer.
Let's pray that continues to be the worst case! Something is very odd with the large variation of CFR numbers when looked at by locale. I've read there are now two different strains of the virus, but not much is said about which which strain is being reported. It would be helpful if John Hopkins or CDC include an identifier for strain in their database.
You're awesome with a spreadsheet! So, how's your charting skills? :)
